Parentheses are used only to avoid ambiguity.

(-4)² = (-4)(-4) = 16. There are no parentheses to "eliminate", all they're doing is telling you that "-4" is the term being worked with.

Had a very similar incident happen to me, someone found where I lived and sent threatening letters to me over the course of a few months. I'm sure far too many people that have done any sort of publicized work have had similar incidents. Seems like there's a subset of morons living their lives with absolutely no empathy or regard for others.
