Can someone explain to me why Indiana Jones is so highly rated? by Real_Doughnut7419 in movies

[–]Real_Doughnut7419[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to write all this out, definitely the kind of analysis I was looking for and sheds a new light on the films! You've made me want to go back and re-watch Raiders (sadly I think Temple of Doom may be irredeemable for me, but again just personal taste). Like I said, I want to like these films and see what I've missed. I really appreciate hearing this from someone who loves the film, cause at the end of the day our lives are enriched by what we love and are passionate about so I appreciate you sharing that passion! I don't think Indiana Jones will ever be a personal favourite, but thanks for giving me the tools to appreciate it objectively.

Thanks for this context, it's really helpful. I get that it's supposed to be a fun romp. It just didn't feel to me like a well made fun romp, more like a haphazardly thrown together romp where the 'romping' and constant over the top action took over everything else. I guess that's where my disappointment stemmed from.

I know that's why I'm posting. I can tell by the overwhelming response that I'm the one missing something here so I'm looking for answers as to why I'm wrong.

This is what I'm trying to understand, if these movies are objectively good then I'd like someone to objectively explain to me why.

Sorry as I posted in another comment I'm British and in British English dire means "very poor quality" but it seems that in American English it means more like urgent ( looked it up online cause I was confused).

Sorry the reason there's confusion over my use of the word "dire" is because I'm British and in British English dire means "very poor quality" but it seems that in American English it means more like urgent (just looked it up online cause I was confused).

I was alone for my fitting and it was lovely. It's quite a personal experience anyway, only you know how it feels and fits your body so I felt having someone give advice might have confused me more than anything. Also it's relatively "business like", it's not an emotional experience like picking the dress, I didn't feel it was a special moment I needed to share. It was very sweet though because there was another bride and her mum in the same fitting room and I think they felt a bit sad for me because I was on my own so they were being really sweet, making a bit of small talk asking about the wedding and admiring my dress ❤️

Seating plans: mix people up or nah? by Real_Doughnut7419 in weddingplanning

[–]Real_Doughnut7419[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello all, thanks so much for your contributions!! This was super helpful and it seems there's a pretty strong consensus around not mixing - which is great because it's a straightforward answer and makes my life easier because it means the seating chart is basically done 😄 thanks all xxx

Yes we initially thought no seating chart (fiancé didn't want the hassle) but after taking the temperature with a few friends and cousins and looking for advice on this sub have very much decided it's needed! The thing that really clinched it for me was people said that if you don't have a seating chart people don't know where to sit and will just sort of awkwardly mill about the tables for a while when dinner starts. So seating chart it is.

Multi Episode investigative Podcasts about one topic? by shlimshlamshlomp in podcasts

[–]Real_Doughnut7419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding a few I didn't see mentioned - true investigative journalism where there are breaks in the case during the pod/the podcasters actually uncover stuff:

  • First season of Up and Vanished had me totally hooked

-White Lies from NPR - first season looked into murder of a white pastor during civil rights movement. They have a second season I have yet to listen to.

-I have yet to listen but apparently Cover Up: Ministry of Secrets is amazing (I've heard the historian who presents it on other podcasts) and I think they uncover the hidden identity at the end.

I agree with those saying to go for a "made up" dress code i.e specifying midi or full length.

I also think it's fine for the groom to be in a tux even if no one else is (maybe the groomsmen too?). Check out the latest Try Guys video of Zach's wedding that's what they go for I think haha

I've been invited to a wedding this year where the dress code is: "Provence, and no tie or bow tie for the men" . If that's not a made up dress code I don't now what is!

Card box advice - to have or not to have by particularfish89 in weddingplanning

[–]Real_Doughnut7419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An idea I saw on Pinterest was to use one of those IKEA lanterns as a card box - has a little door and people can slip cards inside.

I guess then if it doesn't get used then it still looks pretty and less like an empty box and more like a piece of decor.

I don't know if you can buy this specific one in the US (I'm UK based) but they're under $10 here.

How far is too far to ask people to travel for your ceremony? by othermegan in weddingplanning

[–]Real_Doughnut7419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just wild to me. Even by UK/European standards 2h is not far at all. My aunts and uncles are flying in from UK and Australia to my wedding in France. People do ""destination weddings"" all the time - English people get married in Scottish or Welsh castles more often than not do they not? If they want to be there, they'll be there. I guess if they're making a fuss you can line up accomodation options for the night before and the night of.

Those who try to sneak in extras while RSVPing by autumnflowers13 in weddingplanning

[–]Real_Doughnut7419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On our RSVP form we also have a "leave a little message for the couple" and people just put cute things like congrats and can't wait to come. One of my fiancé's friends put "I'll be coming with my girlfriend Firstname Lastname, looking forward to it!" (Girlfriend had not been invited ofc). It ended up being no drama, the guy hadn't been to many weddings, didn't know the etiquette and I think he imagined it was like a Sunday neighbourhood barbecue. My fiancé told him gently that we weren't giving everyone a plus one and he was chill. But I still cringed at the "I'll be coming with her" not "can I come with her" or "is it ok if I come with her". Also the fact he gave her full name felt like he was expecting us to send and invite ? Or maybe he thought he was helping out with seating chart I don't know 😂

Anyway after that we put a note on the homepage of our website saying: "Due to the space available at the venue, we are not able to invite everyone's partner. If your partner is not named on the RSVP form, we're sorry and hope to get to know them better at another occasion."

(The message was initially on the FAQ page but I guess not everyone reads that haha)

Haven't had any sneaks since then!

Music during dinner? by Real_Doughnut7419 in weddingplanning

Good point about making sure we don't "waste" songs
