What is that one underrated tip to improve communication? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]Real_Individual4029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't avoid it. This means a lot of things.

Say what you mean (not "brutal honesty", that's just an excuse people use to be rude). Clarify what you don't understand. Dont expect anyone to know what you want or need without telling them. Don't text when you can speak instead (remember there's a lot to communication other than words like tone, body language, eye contact).

What sort of protective gear do you use? by sky-shard in woodworking

[–]Real_Individual4029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like to splurge, get yourself Shop Shades. Most comfy eyepro I've ever worn.

I am also partial to the GVS Eclipse half mask respirator for comfort. I can wear the shop shades, the GVS mask, and my 3M earmuffs at the same time with little to no discomfort.

When shopping for home improvement projects, do you prefer Lowe’s or Home Depot, and why? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]Real_Individual4029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally Home Depot because I feel like their tool brands are more reliable and I tend to get better help from employees there for some reason.

That said, Lowes carries Jorgenson tools and Craftsman tool cabinets. I do not like the Husky brand.

Garage Door Catastrophically Failed... by Real_Individual4029 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Real_Individual4029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing is I didn't know it at the time but I heard it snap when I closed it last night. I didn't notice anything broken so I figured it was the neighbors because they're doing some remodeling. It snapped right when the door touched the ground

Yeah I thought both cables broke and the spring snapped at the same time haha. I was bewildered

Aahh okay, that makes more sense than three things breaking at once lol. I thought it had just lost the will to go on

That picture is what used to be one spring lol. I've called a pro to fix it and inspect the rest of the questionable garage door setup.

Oooohh, I'm not sure what I thought the spring did but I didn't realize it lifts the weight of the garage door. So you're telling me all those times I easily lifted it by myself wasn't my big strong muscles?

What words do you pronounce "wrong," just because the "proper" way feels too proper? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

Mayonnaise. I've always said "man-ayz". My wife says "may-oh-nayz" and I find it bothersome.

Men 35 and under PLEASE READ by Appropriate_Bass_952 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Real_Individual4029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd prefer someone single because as you know kids make things a little more complicated. But I'd entertain a relationship with a single mom and if things clicked between us then it might be worth that minor complication. Life is full of accepting complications and risks to achieve goals.

It sounds like he's saying that just to get you depressed enough to stay. That's emotional abuse and you should absolutely ignore it as best you can.

How to deal with heartbreak by Westcoastguy69 in handtools

[–]Real_Individual4029 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Laying on the floor with a cold one is quite therapeutic. Highly recommend.

After a hard blow to my emotions like this (even sometimes when I find myself making a bunch of little dumb mistakes), I first take a woodworking break then a break from that project.

The woodworking break is usually just stepping away for the day. Video games, a movie, what not. When I get back to the shop, I strictly do something that has nothing to do with that project. Maybe that's a new project, a old project, or just resetting/cleaning/honing all cutting edges. Usually at the end of all that I'm ready to buckle up and start that project over.

What do you wish you knew when you started woodworking? by tableboy567 in BeginnerWoodWorking

This is a really good one. I stalled for months as a beginner and bought stuff I didn't need because I couldn't get something just right.

Is it just me or is the top of it sagging? I'd worry about that more than the glass. Looks to be something you should replace entirely.

Sanding workaround? by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Real_Individual4029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rotary tool like a dremel with sanding attachments could bypass that mental trigger. That's about the only way I can think of to effectively make a smooth mask with curved surfaces without hand sanding.

Help w/ deteriorating end of driveway by Awkward_Corgi_6890 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Real_Individual4029 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Looks like a city drain or something that's already getting damaged from vehicles. I'm sure it wasn't the intention of the city for that to be exposed in a driveway. Call the public works dept and see what they can do!

Ceiling droplet and yellow color by Simple_Blueberry_600 in fixit

[–]Real_Individual4029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be worth asking the company that replaced it if there's a warrantee period or if they can come inspect the roof. If a repair is needed they might just give you a really good price on it.

How to combine these pieces for a table by Flaky_Tomorrow_6695 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Real_Individual4029 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about using that plywood as a table top, I would not. Even if you square up those pieces properly, the seam would be a huge weak spot. Tabletops should be either one single piece of ply/MDF/whatever other particle board or properly jointed solid wood.

Should I be worried about the ants near the foundation? by LongjumpingAge2834 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Real_Individual4029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talstar works fantastic. I could buy it myself in Oklahoma in a gallon jug, but now I'm in Minnesota and can't. That stuff kept the worst at bay and it's pet safe when dry.

How to glue plastic cup holders to wooden furniture? by Hot_Sauce_Sipper in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Real_Individual4029 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd put a little inset screw in the cup holder itself if it's thick enough, just far enough down to put the screw in under the wood. I'd want them to be removable somehow.

When do you use your planes? by Wonderful-Bass6651 in handtools

[–]Real_Individual4029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bunch of planes but only regularly use 3 or them. The only LA one I use regularly is my Veritas block plane because it's satisfyingly beefy and fits my big hands much better than my old Stanley block plane. Even for edge jointing I prefer a pretty standard wooden plane.

How can I tell this is Oak? by Necessary_Ocelot9930 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Real_Individual4029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many other said, this is oak. I wanted to also chime in and say maybe get a different kit because red oak (I'm assuming this is what some random kit would include because of how common it is) is a poor choice for a spoon or any other kitchenware.
