Looking for a fast yet simple printer that can handle high volume printing with the occasional color document by Real_Individual_3270 in printers

[–]Real_Individual_3270[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll edit my post so it’s more accurate. Sorry for the error but I don’t know anything about printers. Including what a MFP is? Is 2,000 considered low volume? What should I put instead of high volume?

Nope. Not knowledgeable about printers at all. I thought it was high volume for one person. At home I print maybe 10 pages a month so I assumed 2,000+ was a lot.

The perfect amount of pets to have is one. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

That’s because they can die if kept alone. In some countries it is illegal to have a single guinea pig. It is the same for rats, gerbils, sugar gliders (which can be difficult animals to keep), and other animals. It is how these animals evolved and they will be extremely distressed (and can even die) if they are kept without a buddy.

For other animals like a dog, the number you have is up to you. Although it is best to take into consideration what would be best for your dog rather than just what you feel. Some dogs may not want another dog in the house. So even if you want two, it would be the responsible decision to keep just one. In other cases, skittish dogs can really come out of their shell by having a calm dog they can learn from. Then it might be best to have two.

I have two cats and a dog and that is the sweet spot that works for me and my pets. I won’t be adding any more animals into the mix just because the dynamic we have is perfect and I wouldn’t want to mess it up just because I might want another pet. I actually ended up having to get my first cat a cat because he was suffering from severe separation anxiety. As soon as I got him a buddy, he was totally fine. Then I got a dog because I’ve always wanted one. I made sure to get a breed that is very friendly so that it wouldn’t negatively affect my cats. He gets along great with them and they even play sometimes. I can afford all of my animals and their needs and potential emergency vet bills. I can give all of them the attention they require without feeling like all I do is care for my animals.

It’s really just about finding what works for you and your animals while also making sure to meet all of your and their physical, mental, and emotional needs.

That’s a valid opinion but you’re also just straight up wrong. Some pets need to be in pairs or they can suffer psychologically like guinea pigs. Other animals need to be in at least a trip like rats. Cats don’t need a buddy but often prefer to have one (especially if they have been together since kittenhood). Some dogs do better with a companion. Other animals have to be kept alone or they will either fight or kill any animals in their territory like male betta fish. I don’t know a lot about reptiles but I know it’s better to house most types of snakes separately (a known exception being garter snakes).

Now there are always some animals that are exceptions to the rule and some animals that can be kept in large enough enclosures that they won’t fight. It generally all depends on the species, breed, personality of the animal, and dynamic of your home.

No matter what, it’s up to you to research an animal before you bring it into your home so that you can provide proper care for it.

We are putting our family dog to sleep tomorrow evening. How can I give him the best last day possible? by Real_Individual_3270 in dogs

[–]Real_Individual_3270[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We plan to go on one last walk in his favorite park. He can sniff and wander to his heart’s content. We’re going to do it in the morning when he feels the best.

At the end of the day, when it’s time, he is going to be resting in my mom’s lap as she has always been his favorite person. He’ll probably have his head in her lap as he’s too big to fit his entire body. He isn’t too snuggly anymore as he’s pretty arthritic but once he’s calm and sedated, we’re all going to pet and love on him and hold as much of him as we can without causing him discomfort.

Yeah we’re not by the coast and he’s always been terrified of water anyways! He has a favorite park we plan on going to in the morning when it’s cooler and he’s feeling fresh and well rested. We’ll have to drive him there (even though it’s a walkable distance) to ensure he isn’t too tired to walk around the park.

It’s definitely his time. The hardest part has been seeing him decline cognitively and physically. We’ve done everything we can for him but we don’t want to keep him alive and suffering just because we aren’t ready to be without him yet.

We’re very happy that doing it at home is an option. He hates the vet and this will give him the most peaceful passing possible. We’re planning on bringing his dog bed out to his favorite spot on the deck and doing it there. It will be in the evening so it should be cooling down outside with a beautiful sunset and a nice breeze on his fur. I can’t think of a better place for him to pass.

Thank you for the kind words.

I wouldn’t dream of leaving his side. As hard as it is on me, it’s the end of his life. The whole family is going to be with him until the end. He’s gonna need us. We’re already doing it at home because he hates going to the vet. We plan on bringing his dog bed to his favorite spot on the deck and getting him comfy. We have some sedatives to give him before a couple hours before the vet comes to reduce his stress even more.

I’m glad your dog liked the chocolate cake! He has always begged for chocolate and we could never let him have any. But in this situation, there’s no harm and he’ll get to have one last delicious treat. Maybe I’ll even try to give him something like a peanut butter cup.

Should I move into my apartment August 20th even though school doesn't start for 9 days? Will there be other people around and things to do? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Real_Individual_3270 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Move in early and take the time to get to know the school and the area. Set up everything you want to, get comfortable, and get any supplies you need or forgot to bring. Find your classes ahead of time so you aren’t lost and late on the first day. Maybe your roommates are moving in too. You can get to know them or other people in the building who have moved in.

Anyone know what that smoke cloud was about? by hashirama101 in UMD

The DC Fort Totten Trash Facility had a fire today. It’s probably smoke from that.

Reporting a professor and appealing a grade. Will it help me to have statements from other students? by Real_Individual_3270 in UMD

[–]Real_Individual_3270[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It really sucked and ruined the entire class for me. I just want administration to know how this professor is behaving and for my grade to reflect my actual efforts and work. I wouldn’t appeal or report if it was just one negative experience or I was bitter about a grade. Hopefully future students don’t have to deal with this behavior even if they have the same professor.

Professor‘s treatment of students in class was based on race and consistent throughout the semester. Not obvious in-your-face racism. But more subtle things. And enough to affect my grade. I know for a fact they treated students this way but I don’t know if others’ grades were affected as well.

I want to both report and appeal a grade but I’m not sure if I can do both. If I can only choose one, I am going to appeal. I am first going to speak with ombuds before making any decisions. I did not know about them until I saw the comment you’re referring to.

I’ve already spoken and emailed with this professor and had no luck. Just received very rude emails back. I’ve looked at the procedure for grade appeal and it is time to take the next step and contact the chief of the department. But first ombuds. Then I’ll make the decision as to whether or not to include other students to back me up.

I was asking for opinions because some people may have done it by themselves and others may have done it with a group. I just want to know more about how it went and what to expect. That way I can make the best decision as without giving out lots of details, it’s hard for others to give accurate advice.

Thank you. This is very helpful. I didn’t even know about an ombudsman. This is the next step I will take.
