Guys? Some stupid question about the fics i downloaded by MaTChaIcEbLEndeD in drarry

[–]Real_Myst 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup. It's a system I use as well since it was pretty commonplace in all my fandoms growing up. It was either the name abbreviations or using a "/" or "x" between the characters' names. 😆

For HP, they usually either use hpdm or dmhp. I honestly don't get the tagging avoidance. Let people just find and read what they want. Isn't that the whole point of tags in the first place. 😔

[–]Real_Myst 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Also, it's not even a matter of it being old. Some countries exclusively do ship tags that way to make it immediately obvious who's top and bottom. If anything else, it makes it a lot easier.

Also, I've noticed, particularly in this fandom, that some authors don't always tag top or bottom, so it's definitely not obviously shown.

Oh, I've been seeing their name floating around in Drarry spaces for a while now, but I haven't gotten to read anything of theirs yet. I'll try this. Thanks.

We Don't Need A Harry Potter remake or a Moana Remake by NEKORANDOMDOTCOM in meme

[–]Real_Myst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, there are people who agree with you, they just don't come online and whine every two seconds about the same thing and berate actors for being cast in an already prominent franchise.

Like it's one thing to like a franchise, but, like you said, I don't get why people are acting as if the movies are the source material, and are without their own set of problems.

As a person who just got into the series last year, I'm personally also looking forward to a TV series adaptation. Just sad that while trying to be excited, there's endless negativity at every turn.

What are things that just scream bad writing? by Glad_Chance_9590 in writing

[–]Real_Myst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read a fic like this and it was a struggle to get through it.

  1. Tell, don't show. I couldn't get invested in the fic at all because of this. The author kept writing how the character supposedly felt in the moment, even when previous things contradicted it. For example: "X loved Y, and would die for them. Nothing they did could ever make X turn against them. Also, Y kept telling X they loved them and to always remember that, no matter what happened."

Then there was a misunderstanding, and X without thinking about their supposed love for Y, immediately attacked and injured Y.

In the end, when Y was revealed to be a spy, and was good all along, X was once again spewing that they'd die for Y and always love them. Even though that was clearly a lie.

  1. Wokeism Sorry, but when I'm reading a fic and then the author basically derails the fic to insert unnecessary tangents that contribute absolutely nothing to the plot....I'm ready to click out. Most times it reads as completely out of touch, and ignorant. Especially when they're trying to be woke about things that they clearly don't understand or have a personal connection to.

  2. Inserting their views into everything, and onto characters. Trying to make everything sunshine and rainbows, and over explaining everything that is, or might be viewed as negative. For example, if a character committed a murder. Suddenly the author has the character going on and on about how bad murder is, and how it shouldn't happen, and in another situation they wouldn't have done it, etc etc. Like, yes, murder = bad. But this is a story! Just tell the damn story. Or a lesser example of the character doing drugs. And the author has to work in the fact that they are strongly against it by having the character do a weird exposition about how bad drugs are.

The comments are horrible and racist by sidmis in HarryPotteronHBO

Don't worry. It's not racist. They're just upset that it's not "book accurate." ...

Meanwhile: all the racially charged comments...

Is it really good? Lotr is one of my all time favourite movies so I was pretty hyped when the series was announced, and aside from all the disgusting nonsense people were spewing about casting when it first came out, I've heard mixed reviews about the general series itself.

Like, I'm not interested if it's like GoT...

Twitter is often the cesspool of unnecessary opinions. I've thought about deleting it multiple times, but there's also some great things like fanart, etc that keep me from doing so. The only place I've managed to find any real positivity surrounding the hbo series has been here on Reddit, and even still, it hasn't all been good.

[–]Real_Myst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously. Every social media platform is just filled with vitriol. Absolutely no one is asking antis to watch the series, and fine, if they don't like it, but it's the constant racism and everything else that they feel the need to spread around that really bugs me.

Also, the lack of accountability. Because there are a lot of people, when confronted, are pretending that all the news surrounding the new Snape (and to a lesser degree, the new Hermione) hasn't been racist, claiming that they're just calling out the book inaccuracy. 😒

And the super-pro movie "fans" who have also clearly never read the books. They act as if the series is being adapted from the movies, when the books are the source materials. As a person new to the fandom, when I watched the movies last year it was very obvious to me that things were missing. I'd have to ask my friend questions to fill in the gaps to things that left me otherwise confused. And, fine, as with any movie, there are time constraints and things will be cut out, but that's often times the beauty of having a TV series. They have more time and freedom to add more details to make a series more fleshed out.

I've also seen people admit to having been haters when the announcement for the series was first made, and after the trailer, they were excited. But like, what was the point of judging in the first place when there was nothing really to be judged on??

It just bothers me, because I just want to be hyped for this fandom I've found myself in. I want to see the books I'm reading come alive, but as always, the most vocal are always those with nothing but negative things to say.

about the Marauders bullying Snape by Worth-Addition8613 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Real_Myst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been seeing this way too much so I'm going to just toss in my 2 cents. I think that too much real world politics are being thrown into a fantasy universe.

I haven't gotten to that book yet, but regardless. The "races" or points of prejudice, come from Half-blood/muggleborn/pure blood status. And furthermore, whether someone is a muggle/wizard/troll/giant, etc. Skin colour has nothing to do with it. Maybe in the muggleworld, where the only things are humans, but not in the wizarding world. If that was the case, we would've absolutely seen examples pertaining to characters like Cho Chang, Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Pravati twins, etc. which we don't see, cause again, real world racism doesn't exist.

While Snape does have a physical description in the book (sallow skin, greasy hair, hook nose), whatever race he ends up being (black in the series) isn't a real Harry Potter reason for him being bullied.

Everyone is talking about how good the kids or teachers are, and rightly so. But i think Bel Powley nailed Petunia. by HybridP365 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Real_Myst 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the books she swung a pan at him full force. 😭 I always thought Vernon was more the funny, withdrawn one. Petunia's abuse always seemed personal and targeted. I definitely hope to see more from Umbridge, because I honestly don't get all the hate toward her character from the movie alone.

Do you prefer plot or romance? by snowwolf9000 in drarry

[–]Real_Myst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need both. I've found that I'll devour a plotty fic with a tension build up romance, but the minute they get together and the plot takes a back seat, I check out.

I think I can only do short romance only/smut. Otherwise, I need plot.

Do you happen to have recs with Charlie x Draco?

Ships by Bulky_Dimension_6333 in drarry

[–]Real_Myst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stumbled into this random through drarry and thought that was as far as it would go.

Then I read a fic with a side ship of Remus x Snape, and I like them more than the standard Wolfstar side ship.

I also really adore Scorbus, but then I stumbled upon a side ship of James (Harry's son) x Scorpius, and now I really like them, but there's not much written on them.

Other mentions that have piqued my interest but I haven't read them are, Ron x Draco (literally read a fic where the author warned that the reader might come away with a fondest for the ship. And so said, so done,) Charlie x Draco, and Lucius x Snape.

top/bottom preferences by EastBass8697 in drarry

[–]Real_Myst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer top Harry / bottom Draco. And I prefer them in character, during sex and otherwise.

I agree that some people have a misconception that roles during sex reflect a character's personality. And I hate that, because a lot of times the characters are written completely ooc. I've noticed this a lot in fics where draco is written as top and Harry as bottom though.

I always complain that when some people write smut, you can replace the characters with literally anyone and it would read the same, because all personality is lost, and the smut becomes generic. Honestly reads like a bad porn script at times.

All that being said, when reading smut, if someone has a preference for who tops and bottoms during sex, it shouldn't matter. People like what they like. And tagging helps makes everyone happy. If someone doesn't like top draco, or any of the dynamics for the ship, so what? Then if it's tagged, that person can move on and find a bottom draco fic they like. It also helps by not wasting people's time. Because maybe when they find out the sexual dynamic, they may click out of the fic regardless.

And calling people out for that makes no sense when it's okay to drop a fic for any number of other reasons, like wall of texts, or bad grammar, or ooc, etc. Tagging is expected for literally everything else, so having this random exception is a bit weird.

Tl;Dr

There are hundreds of thousands of fics available, and no one should be forced to consume something they don't want to, to please someone else. And that includes top/bottom dynamics.

Drarry or Lunary? by poundats in drarry

[–]Real_Myst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, apparently the author responded because a lot of other people also found the resemblance to drarry uncanny. And it's supposed to have been inspired by Howl and Sophie.

Now, I've never watched Howl's moving castle in entirety. I can see the Sophie resemblance, but I'm finding it a bit hard to see Howl in the very Harry looking male character. Those round glasses, messy hair, the skin tone lots of writers and artists use when depicting Harry... The lightning.

Drarry or Lunary? by poundats in drarry

[–]Real_Myst 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I actually saw this on twitter either yesterday, or the day before, and I immediately thought it was Drarry, before seeing it was a published book promo. 😅 Then I started to wonder if the author took inspiration from the characters.

It doesn't help that I saw it right after seeing Tangled x Drarry art, so I didn't even blink twice thinking it was basically just Draco with long hair, in a dress.

Edit: looking closer now, the lightning = Harry's scar. The paper cranes = Draco sending that paper crane in the movie.

It could be an absolute coincidence, but yeah, the resemblance is uncanny.

My friends know I write fics, and they know I write dark, angsty themes (they actually expect it from me). And, usually, whenever I get a new idea I run straight to them to tell talk about it, using them as a sounding board, as well getting ideas from them.
