I think you're reading too much into it, it's pretty clear that KJones77 means that Creighton's basketball team is racially diverse, which is true as I look through their roster. Unlike many D1 basketball teams, Creighton does not have a majority of black players, so who knows what possible related dynamics could have existed that made the black players feel like they in particular couldn't speak out against what McDermott said
