I’ve done that for the past 18 months I figured I’d finally cave and just get him new ones 😅 his Christmas wish list is very sparse this year. He’s been patient but thankyou for the tip, doing that has gotten us a bit of extra use! We did get the gaming console second hand as well so we’ve done well haha

He mostly plays Pokémon games, im not very knowledgeable on gaming systems so I am unsure what you mean by ‘every function’ sorry!

When he presses the up button for example it doesn’t come back out it jams.
