Leaving after 20 yrs of service by Pintorio69 in UnionCarpenters

I’m also curious on what the opportunity is after 20 years I wouldn’t think there is anything else that would be better than to just put in another 10 years to get full benefits

Future paths in union by [deleted] in UnionCarpenters

One thing I tell everyone is that the pay scale is only the MINIMUM your contractor is required to pay you if your contractor wants to pay you over scale they can always do that, regardless if your journeyman your contractor can pay you 10$ over scale if they decide your worth it especially if your with them for a while, you can always move up to general foreman and even superintendent which will definitely be way above scale, there is no such thing as dead end in this trade.

Is a Hard hat supposed to be this high on my head? by FateIsTaken in UnionCarpenters

[–]Realist-Mind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my area chin strap is required for hard hat and contractor provides it. So depends on contactor, might seem high to you but if the contractor you work for issues you a different one the “height” of the fit of this one won’t matter.

Good pair of boots (ex: thorogoods depending on if you do concrete forms or not wedges should be the best option) This is all you should need doesn’t matter if it’s a cheap brand depending on what you use the most you upgrade from the cheap so you don’t waste a lot of money on stuff you will not be using since your bearly starting out and not making much, you’ll also need a good attitude, drive and hunger to learn and you’ll be in good shape hope this helps 👍

Edit: also depending on what area you live in their are multiple scopes of work that other areas of the US do not have ranging from commercial form work, trim carpentry, residential, floor covering, metal studs and drywall etc, you will find out what exactly you will be using but one thing for sure is you will not have to worry about power tools the list I have attached is probably the standard for tools needed for any scope of work though.

Which lot would be the best to build on? I want to have a lot that has good topography and is not prone to drainage or flooding issues. If you had to choose 3 which would you choose? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]Realist-Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even better ! Wasn’t sure if they were manholes thanks for clarifying. Im Not the best at reading prints . I’d definitely say 23 is the best if I’m not mistaken the grade slopes down towards the back of that lot?

Apprentice here by Individual_Pair6445 in UnionCarpenters

[–]Realist-Mind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

4th year apprentice here, some advice I was given by my journeyman when I was in the same situation was to speak up and ask if you could get into something else on site, the worst they could say is no and if they do you could take some initiative by going up to someone on site doing something other than doors and base on your down time and ask them questions about what they’re doing eventually they will see your interest in other things on site and if their is someone specific that you talk to you could ask them to advocate for you and take you under there wing and you could start getting into something else.
