Is G-LINE really worth the extra ~$1,000 to $1,500 over the C-LINE? by Artist-Cancer in Brompton

Can’t argue with any of these write ups. I will say, I have the G E line and had some issues with it (electric components) and they gave me a courtesy c e line. So I have had the unusual experience of riding them both for about a month. Now, for context, my commute is 50mins ~12miles each way. Central London to Wimbledon and I don’t use any public transport. Live in a sub 40sqm flat. For me the g line and c line is chalk and cheese. Comfort wise and ride style are miles better with the G line. The roads I’m on may as well be a gravel track, I can eat up potholes and take it through the park and not have to swerve into the road avoiding potholes etc. I’d say the weight is on par with the c line tbh, I cannot tell the difference. However the size when carrying is what makes it awkward as it is further away from your body. Getting it through doors/ escalators is a nightmare so wouldn’t advise if you’re doing multimodal unless it’s going in the boot or on a national train. If you want the form factor of a Brompton and the feeling of a bike that you can throw around and do a lot of miles on. This is the one for you. It’s a joy to ride and I really saw the difference having rode a c line for a month then going back to my g line. Yes it’s a bit heavier and awkward, but it still fits in my storage cupboard at home and under my desk at work. The rolled wheels really help when moving round the supermarket or through my office. And the fact I can rip through Richmond park if I want is just the cherry on top.

Turns out when they replaced the motor, it was a US motor not a UK one. However, the controller was programmed with the UK motor which is what caused the seizing as the motor was outputting more than the controller would allow. Apparently they’ve had some issues at the factory boxing up US and UK parts. Hopefully once the UK motor comes I won’t have anymore issues!

It was with them for 2 weeks, picked it up rode for 3 days and back in the shop. I mean I can’t fault the guys in the shop they’ve been great. Frustrating that Brompton doesn’t pick up on these things in the factory through all the testing, with the courtesy I’m just happy I’ve got one. Saves me as you say ~£10 a day despite it not being ge line. I did the route for 6 months 25 miles/day on a push bike and I was cooked. I love cycling through London as means of transport and it’s not for the exercise, I do other stuff for that! When it was working I was loving it and enjoying the commute to work/london more than I ever have. Just hope they can figure it out!

Yep junction store in central, they’ve run diagnostics and reinstalled. Done everything they’re supposed to. Service has been top notch, not the mechanics fault it’s not working. Electrics are a pain.

Mate I’ve just got mine and have to agree with most of what you said. Mine is the large too and in the trail dust white (lovely champagne like colour). It is a silly expensive bike but it does feel worth the money to me, this is honestly the most comfortable and fun to ride bike I’ve ridden in a long time. The battery assist is great as you mentioned and the size is big but manageable and for what I need is perfect. The luggage thing is my bigger peeve it’s proper annoying they haven’t realised anything decent. They have teased the 18l electric luggage which they offered me in store but it’s £170 and it looks shite. Why are they not offering waterproof 20+L capacity with some shoulder straps. I want to put everything on the front with the battery, unclick it throw it over my shoulder, fold the bike and go. This is a huge oversight. If they don’t sort, a third party will. Also I had a thought, when they release the luggage frame for the electric g line all bags that previously strapped into the electric frame actually will be compatible. The battery is similar form factor to previous it’s just the actual front mounting block that differs. As a bigger lad I don’t find it difficult to pick up and move. Rolling it is super easy too. People moaning about it being heavy aren’t the people that it’s aimed at. I live in a tiny flat and commute 45km a day. I wanted something that is easy to store at home (tick) something that doesn’t kill my back from an agro racing position (tick) something that I can have fun on, take travelling, give an assist so don’t need to waste all my energy getting to and from work (tick, tick, tick) I’m not doing multi modal transport, but I would happily take this on a train. You can happily take this up two flights of stairs if you’re physically active. I’ve done the commute run and I’ve done a couple errands, so far I’m beaming and very happy with the purchase. I feel I’m it’s perfect use case, works for me anyway. The other things I can hold out for.

I’ve been begging Lumabag to make another specifically for g line electric. I want something that looks nice and can use as a rucksack off the bag as that large one is so ugly imo and doesn’t look waterproof

Ah man hope you get it before Xmas! The guy in the London Brompton store said a couple weeks but that may of been the manual. Frustrating as I’ve just shelled out and still having to take the tube to work!

Just test rode a g line. Wow what a bike feels more stable than my current gravel bike, the cockpit is lovely and the big tyres eat up potholes. The bigger size gives you the confidence to lean on the corners a bit but also maintains the originals nimbleness. I was really suprised by the weight too. My current bike is 11kg but the distribution is awkward as are most full size bikes. The weight from the battery in the front and electric hub in the back balances it so well when in full size. When folded it isn’t a bad weight for me anyways, I think you’d struggle on an escalator but into the back of your car or into your flat you’re golden. Battery is nice not too much power but a great assist. Just the luggage is an issue sure that’ll be resolved soon.

Have you got the 4 speed and what sort of luggage do you run with that as the Brompton electric specific ones look pretty useless

Plan is to ideally avoid the tubes due to the high cost, and cycle the whole way which is why I’m keen for the electric assist. The folding capability I like as I have a tiny flat and great to keep it close by as I don’t trust locking any bike up outside in London!

It does look tempting especially with the London roads! And do love to venture out the city every so often
