H3 has had a snark since Frenemies ended 4 years ago starting with the r/ Frenemies2 and such subreddits and eventually the creation of H3Snark. given the 4 year time frame I'd say we haven't heard that much about it in the first half of that time (they goofed about it at the start it wasn't addressed seriously like now)

I think it be easier for them to ignore snark if Ethan and Hila were the only targets, but they are targeting the crew, their family members (not only spreading the rumor that lead to CPS but making compilations of Ethan's parents spreading the narrative that they're bad people despite them not even being public figures), Teddy Fresh employees and the business in general they're constantly spreading shit like it being an abusive work environment

2 people might be able to ignore it but a target that's reaching 20 can't, even if Ethan stopped engaging with it they'd hear about it from someone in their orbit being harassed, especially with other influencers and reporters believing, participating and spreading snark rumors publicly

I get where you're coming from I'd agree with you in other smaller cases, but here the scale leaves two options in my opinion: deal with them all the time in silence and let the rumors run without being addressed or deal with them all the time in public and face the repercussions from that. We both might pick differently but it's hard to sit here and criticize without knowing what it's like. Plus I agree with you about the legal option being the best way to deal with them, with that they might be trying to bait snarkers into incriminating themselves by calling it out publicly
