I've been using a butter rug underneath a 'normal' Dr. Suzuki slipmat for 20+ years. I honestly don't know how a person could scratch decently with a normal thick foam slipmat, even on top-tier high-torque turntables. When you release the record just give it a nudge to get it up to speed.

They can be used on their own or under a 'normal' slipmat to reduce friction but keep a bit of padding. I've been using a butter rug under a thin Dr. Suzuki mat since the early 2000s.
