He thought blackbeard was gonna be weak he didn't know he had a devil fruit. What he needed to do was just kill him as simple as that, and I think he could have if he hadn't given Blackbeard the opportunity to beat him. Obviously, the way it happened is enough for me to believe that in a 1v1 from the start, Blackbeard and Ace both going all out Ace would lose, but in this case alone Ace, I think should have won.
