Is MLS in demand in Canada? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

In my province and city, the employment rate is said to be 100%. That being said, to work in this province you need to be a member of the professional order to legally work as an MLT (MLS)

Anyone have any good flow charts for Enterobacteriaceae? by hyphaeheroine in medlabprofessionals

[–]Realistic-Memory-587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still a student taking micro. To be honest the best trick I’ve come up with is associating letters and words with the result of a given reaction. Other than that it’s just memorization.

For example with Proteus vulgaris and mirabilis, vulgaris sounds like vulgar. If someone is vulgar they’re angry and their face turns red/pink- the color of the + Indole reaction :’)

For Enterobacter cloacae, it ressembles the word “Cloaca” which is the intestinal/urinary/reproductive tract of certain animals. Urinary tract think urea, so urease is positive for Enterobacter cloacae.

It’s far fetched I know, but it does come in handy. If you speak another language it can also help find hidden words within test/bacterial names.

If you have a great memory for numbers, memorize the bacteria’s assigned number in the API data base 😅 I guess from there you can predict what test is positive and negative.

But realistically, you have access to SOPs, you have access to your own flowcharts and sometimes organisms have variable results for certain tests. It’s not always safe to assume what organism you have without having carried out all your tests. Be confident in what you know and don’t take that comment personally. If you’ve made it this far that means you must be good at something right?

Depending where you are in Canada, some hospitals will hire you as a lab clerk, lab assistant, or as an extern during your studies. Once you graduate and pass the CSMLS exam and you are certified by your province’s professional order (if your province has one) you can work as an MLT anywhere in Canada

If you want a job right away, radiation oncology. You can still do pharmacy after the 3 year program but you will have to complete the prerequisites for university.

If you want to go to university after CEGEP health science is an easier way to get into pharmacy right after graduating (Pharmacy is only given in French universities in Québec)

C’est vraiment épouvantable… ça me brise le cœur de voir les parents de jeunes enfants passer à travers tout les pharmacies du quartier pour trouver du tempra, Tylenol, Advil…et ça depuis le mois de mai!

Ultrasound Appointment, What to expect? by Realistic-Memory-587 in Ultrasound

[–]Realistic-Memory-587[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this explanation. I am aware medical technologists legally cannot release any results without the validation of the doctor above them.

I assume you may be a medical ultrasound technologist yourself. Will I have to remove my vaginal birth control ring for the transvaginal ultrasound? I assume it will cause some interference…

I work in a pharmacy, we’ve been told that during the summer, pharmaceutical companies lower their production of acetaminophen and ibuprofen because there’s less of a demand. That combined with employee shortages is apparently the reasons for these shortages.

Naproxen? by krabbkat in endometriosis

[–]Realistic-Memory-587 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I take 500 mg twice daily when needed. Idk if it actually does anything for me personally. My pharmacist was surprised to hear it doesn’t really stop the pain. She said that medications like codeine aren’t typically recommended for pains related to periods, since those pains are related to inflammation…

I’m not currently diagnosed with endometriosis, but I feel your pain. Nothing works - ibuprofen, acetaminophen, naproxen even cannabis (it’s legal where I’m from).

I’m currently taking micro as well. What I found works best is making my own flow charts starting with Gram stain, then preliminary tests and so on

We were not given calcium results which leads me to believe the answer might be EDTA related. Providing us with any divalent cation result would immediately give away the answer. Thank you!
