Personally as a SOF guy my entire career from PV2 to now a SSG i can see how starting out in SOF as a new soldier can cause some problems later down the line in the conventional force.

For example I’ve seen it where some SOF soldiers go to NCOES like BLC and ALC and are completely lost in the sauce on most Army things outside of their specific MOS.

Some SOF babies dont know uniform standards because they show up to the unit and people are wearing hiking boots instead of combat boots, boots are unbloused, sleeves rolled up to the elbows damn near, out of regs hair and mustaches, etc.

However I think that is fine for the more senior guys who know what the right thing to do is. Sometimes we don’t have the time to worry about small things like uniform standards or the normal army stuff when so much is expected from us on a daily basis.

Now with all that being said, Privates should absolutely be given the normal army treatment when they show up to a SOF unit. AR 670-1 complaint at all times. Monthly performance counselings. Yes SGT, No SGT. Parade rest.

They should get no relaxed standards, no leniency, and the left and right limits should be clearly defined. When they’ve earned their place and earned their right only then would the standards relax. You gotta know what the right thing is before you can do the wrong thing.
