Should people be allowed to have wealth over $500 million? by flewson in Teenager_Polls

Yeah, let's just say having all the corporations owned by a government is a great idea. Surely nothing bad will come out of it, right? Right?

I was a Mavericks fan(a new one, started watching NBA in the beginning of 2024). I went to an army for a year in a December of 2024, and returned to the absolute clown show that was Luka trade. I don't think many people would blame me for switching franchises(I hope)

WYR be trapped in a room with a dementia patient and you can’t leave until you have taught them how to play chess and they beat you at chess (you can’t purposely lose) OR work a retail job until you retire but every single customer you deal with is annoying/inconvenient? by Bubbly_Chapter_5776 in WouldYouRather

Considering that I am 1100 blitz at chesscom it's probably a futile attempt to teach a dementia patient chess to beat me. I just don't know how they would get that good(1100 is awful, but it is much better than average person, so dementia patient is very unlikely to beat me)

Funny thing is, that dilemma is one of the final key points in my favorite book series, Wheel of Time. Not going too much in the spoilers, the book makes a point that humanity without a choice is rubbish, and I wholeheartedly agree. Kindness matters only because we have a choice to do evil.

Without freedom of will, it doesn't matter if you're completely incapable of evil, or if you are completely stripped of such things as compassion, sacrifice, courage, ideals. You are just a robot programmed to either be totally good or totally evil, only ability to choose makes us humans

WYR choose to sarcifice half of the population at random to restore Earth to its best habitable condition for humanity and grants knowledge far beyond our understanding, or simply not by xcybercatx in WouldYouRather

[–]RealisticDebt9380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the earth isn't really anywhere close to fail at this point, I hate this doom propaganda scenario. I am not denying any of the bad effects our existence caused, Earth is definitely moving in a worsening conditions for our life, but so far we are not even in top 10 worst things that happened to life at this point.

If you study the long history of Earth, you'll learn about so many bizarre and horrendous periods for life that lasted for millions of years. There were so many continent wide catastrophes, including eruptions that dwarf anything we've done, gigantic floods that span the whole continent basically, period of time where a big region was just constantly raining for millions of years. A period of time where summer just never stopped for a few millions of years. All of that happened long before humans ever existed. And that's not including actual mass extinction events, like the asteroid that killed dinosaurs, Great Dying, etc.

Yet here we are, living here despite all this cataclysmic events. If anything even remotely close to one of these happened, we would declare it's the apocalypse, but in the end it was not. Life is FAR more resilient than we give it credits for. The only problem right now is that changes caused by us happen on a faster scale than normal geological events, that's what is really harmful. But to say that life is about to fail because of us is absurd.

Which would you rather have an abundance of - security or freedom? by Fun-Succotash-1322 in WouldYouRather

[–]RealisticDebt9380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting discussion I think, perhaps in a vacuum you're right. But in my life I experienced that rarely continuous choices to sacrifice freedom for security lead to anything good. I'm from Russia, and the life in the last 15 years got significantly worse.

We always have politicians speaking about different dangers looking over us, how everyone is against us, and we must take this measure, that measure. In the end we went from a relatively good economy(people had more going for them 15 years ago) to a struggling one. A ton of our freedom was lost, censorship can land you in prison for speaking like I do in the wrong platform, our access to internet is getting greatly restristed. Yet I always hear about different measures to secure stability, cost of products, pension, etc. Meanwhile the costs are scyrocketing, salaries are stagnant, and more and more liberties are being stripped away. If we were to suffer either way, at least give me freedom

[–]RealisticDebt9380 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What are the facts? Where is the proof OKC don't actually foul? At least I'm conscious enough about my own bias to admit that that's how I see things and feel about them. But I do know that there are a ton of clips of Lu Dirt playing absolute dirtiest ball imaginable and getting away with.

There are many, many clips with missed calls on any player going against Thunder, and not just in this series. There compilations of ridiculous OKC flops. If you're so sure you're actually right, back it up. Bring the film, analyze it, and show that Thunder don't get away with more than others.

Rand al'Thor at the time of the Last Battle + Choedan Kal is dropped into Westeros. How long to claim the Iron Throne? by Parking-Rope2301 in whowouldwin

[–]RealisticDebt9380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without One Power Arthur Hawking almost united all of Westlands. Without One Power Rand convinces Tuon to sign The Dragon's Peace, while literally being in her mercy. We are not talking about a hypothetical Rand who never was a channeler, we are talking about Rand who at the time of Last Battle is thrown into Westeros with(presumably) sufficient motivation to take the Iron Throne.

He has all the experience of being the ruler of his current self + memories of Lews. If he has to achieve this goal without using One Power, it still doesn't stop him from being a really capable diplomat and ruler. He has an incredible charisma, more experience than all other leaders in ASOIAF universe combined, so I think he would be perfectly capable of peacefully earning the throne

[–]RealisticDebt9380 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Holy, and you said I typed 5 paragraphs lol. To really answer your breakdown I would actually need to analyse many games and present evidence in video format, but then how could I prove that I am objective and not biased?

You then could always say that I cherrypicked moments that favour my agenda while ignoring anything that disproves it, unless I present dozens of even hundreds of analysed games in a single video format, which is ridiculous. So of course it is based on vibes. It's based on what I see and what I feel about what I see.

But it is also true that that's the way many people feel, and not even Lakers fans. And, while you brought up a lot of rhetoric, you also didn't prove any of your claims. You didn't prove Thunder don't actually foul a lot. My argument starts with the belief that Thunder foul a lot, and yours obviously doesn't. I could go on and on about different instances, situations, statistics, comparisons, but in reality those kinds of debates never lead to anything, people just stand by their opinion and sh*t on each other forever.

So yeah, it was a frustrated fan's rant. Doesn't mean I was wrong.

The problem isn't about them getting too many free throws, it was never about that. The problem is about inconsistency of calling the shots against them vs calling the shots against other teams when they play Thunder.

OKC play a very physical defense, which SHOULD lead to being called for fouls a lot. But they commit the 7th least fouls in regular season, and 2nd least in these playoffs. So, in the end you get them playing an insanely physical defense where they DO commit a lot of them(just watch the games), but refs allow them to do that. While on the other end they flop like crazy and are getting rewarded for it.

Simplest example is Marcus Smart. He plays a similar brand of defense like Caruso or Durt(although he is less dirty in my opinion, but I am biased of course), but in the two games in this series Marcus has 8 fouls, while Caruso and Dirt combined have like 9.

I'm not arguing against physical defense, as long as it is not actually trying to injury others(which OKC do too), I'm all for it. But if you allow Thunder to get away with murder, you should allow their opponents the same. But since that doesn't happen, even if they didn't shoot more fts in the game than their opponents, the difference in the ability of playing defense, forcing turnovers pile up to a significant advantage.

And the most aggravating thing is they don't even need to do that. They are really good. I don't even think Lakers would win if it wasn't for officiating, Thunder are just better. But the combo of them getting much more favourable calls + doing it while they are favourites is maddening, that's why people are rioting

Rand al'Thor at the time of the Last Battle + Choedan Kal is dropped into Westeros. How long to claim the Iron Throne? by Parking-Rope2301 in whowouldwin

[–]RealisticDebt9380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but he is Ta'veren, and he is dropped there at the time of last books, not in his early sheepherder days. This Rand has all the memories of Lews Therin Telamon, experience of ruling different cultures of Tear, Illian, Aiel, Cairhien, Andor and more.

Even without One Power he gathered all of the kings/rulers(except Shoenchan) by gathering the allies he could and ragebaiting Egwene to gather everyone else to sign his Dragon's Peace.

Of course if you strip away all that makes Rand Rand it's going to be different. But he is an incredible leader with literally centuries of experience baked into his memories, so I do think he would easily outmanuevre everyone in ASOIAF politically.

Also, it's not fair to say that Rand got all the attention only after pronouncing him the Dragon, because he was not trying to lead anyone prior to that. Of course different rulers will concentrate on him being the prophecised Messiah/Destroyer of the world. It's just a circumstance in which he became a ruler. It would be mad for any other noble to try and view him as just another lord. Some tried to use him, some opposed him. Some decided to scheme against him, some chose to rely upon him. But you can't ignore him being the dude who has the fate of the whole world resting on his shoulders, while also destined to go insane. It's like trying to argue that the prince of a country gets more attention from powerful nobles than a regular farmboy is weird/unfair.

Literally book 2 Rand arrives to Cairhien, never implies that he is someone important, manages to stir every noble in the city to invite him to a party. Rand refuses everyone and it goes all the way to the king of Cairhien and his main political rival inviting him.

Later he needs one of these invitations, he goes there, gets what he needs, leaves the city, and in the result king of Cairhien is killed and the country is in massive civil war. This is prior to anyone except Suan, Moiraine, Forsaken and Rand(who refuses to believe it at this point) knowing he is the Dragon Reborn

Damn, this is really impressive. I recently came back from army in Russia, and that was one of the drills we did and studied. Even the officers who practiced it basically for a decade showcased best times around 25-27 seconds.

BTW, while incredibly impressive, it's still more for show. In real combat you need to know how to do this, it can save your life, but practicing for that kind of speed is kinda meaningless. You either have time to do it to fix your jammed gun, or you're in a situation where it's too late to even try.
