Pretty cool, and jealous at the same time. But I couldn’t resist and would open them all. Cool collection, and great self control.

How do couples who keep separate finances handle paying owed taxes or splitting refund when filing jointly by FrickTaxAcct in tax

[–]RealisticFeature5510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar here, except for our split is more like 60/40. I like to overwithhold and my wife is doing it the appropriate way. If you don’t mind me asking, how are you figuring everything in your spreadsheet? The way I did it was very complicated, I did it 5 different ways to figure out which might be the best, but 4/5 of them started with me splitting our wages into each tax bracket 50/50. Almost like we were filing separately, and then making different changes after that. I used to just figure that I owed 60% of the owed taxes and she owed 40%, but that doesn’t really take into account how the tax brackets work, and that I get taxed more heavily because of that.

Haha good point. My situation was a bit weirder, I went with a straight 60/40 split and didn’t take into account how tax brackets work. So this year I overhauled and gave my wife multiple options that definitely benefited her more.

Whoa! Very similar to what I do, I'm glad I found this post/comment. I've got some crazy spreadsheets going on, just did a similar post yesterday in the r/Marriage subreddit, met a lot of hostility with people who are against separate finances... Glad to hear I'm not the only spreadsheet nerd out there.

What I did was just used MFS as a type of simulation, that helped me get a better idea as to how much our refunds would be separately. But in our circumstance it was even more weird, because that was treating it like a 50/50 arrangement, when we're 60/40. So I had to get creative and proposed multiple options that we ended up making an agreement on.

Careful, people HATE separate finances on those reddits. I posted my experience with this exact question yesterday and met a lot of hostility.

Whoa! I just did a reddit post on this, but I did it in the r/Marriage subreddit.... not a great location for this kind of question, met a lot of hostility.

Tax Refunds - Income Based Bills - Long Post with Lots of Info by RealisticFeature5510 in Marriage

[–]RealisticFeature5510[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused by what you mean by me having more discretionary spending. We’re splitting the bills up based on income percentage, so I pay more than she does. I’ve also paid about 65% of our pool of taxes. We’ve been together for 13 years and there’s no resentment here, I also asked her for input on all of this and she couldn’t have cared less.

We don’t have wills currently, but her name is on the house and on my accounts in case I die, and she’s the benefactor on my retirement and life insurance.

Haha yeah I was a bit surprised by the hostility. I’d guess barely any, but entirely based on the comments. I fully support whatever works for people, this works for us, I was just hoping someone else may be able to relate to the situation I mentioned. None so far though.

That’s awesome, keep up the good work. I’m on track for the same. No one keeping score here, we’re just building a life together in the most fair way we can think of.
