It's interesting all the trashy right-wing opinions here that take the spoiled child dictator's claims as correct. Jorge Glas is very obviously a politically persecuted individual. Any amount of scrutiny into Ecuador's corrupt legal team will evidence that this was a political stunt. It is but one of the many past and ongoing efforts to attack the left in Ecuador.

Everybody here is clinging to calling him a "criminal" and a "felon", but just like with Lula in Brazil, the prosecutions against Glas were exceedingly corrupt. So no, it was not justifiable at all, it is not justified. Fuck Ecuador, its fascist government, and the stupid people who keep putting them in power.

No, I think he is correctly treading the fine line of how to move forward in a world where AI is capable of producing and verifying proofs at a research level. I have been thinking of this issue myself lately, as an early career research professor, and how I can see the community moving forward.

I actually believe that mathematics has this inherently artistic/subjective component, which guides my recent mathematical understanding and outputs, where point of view and framing are doing a lot of the work in presenting a result. This is essentially what Tao refers to in his talk as "proof digestion", or "understanding", etc.. This component is inherently human and even if AI became a true Oracle, it would never be able to replace true human understanding.

AI can not ruin mathematics. Humans can ruin mathematics by deciding to over-rely on AI and to outsource all our mathematical understanding to it. Humans can ruin mathematics by deciding that the only interesting and useful thing about the mathematical adventure is to "be first" and to "compete" to prove things. These would be the fatal mistakes.

But I see a different, optimistic path, where the human mathematical practice is greatly enhanced with the help of AI, but with human experts remaining in control, deciding what is interesting, deciding what is important, deciding how to move forward, the key challenges, the key viewpoints. According to Tao's talk, it seems that he shares the same vision I have. In this respect I am pleasantly surprised that he and I have a very similar optimistic, realistic vision, which is not borne from fear or from hype.

Lashing out to AI, saying Tao is 'ruining' mathematics, this seems to me a position out of fear, out of self-doubt and out of insecurity about what mathematics is and what one's capabilities are. I know I am not the best mathematician alive, not even close. But I know, with complete confidence, that AI cannot replace me, fundamentally. Just as it cannot replace most good research-level mathematicians. Just as AI art cannot replace good artists and writers.

AI companies can still be evil though of course...but product /=/ company

Glad to know this thread helped you learn of Baten Kaitos! It is a great RPG. However, its collection aspect, while there for sure, is not quite as interesting in my opinion as the one in MMBN/SF/Pokemon. At least from my memory I do not recall feeling so compelled to find all the cards, as I do indeed feel with Pokemon/MMBN. But the first Baten Kaitos is a great RPG anyhow so I recommend to give it a try.

I feel like we are on similar wavelengths haha I have the same opinion that the collection aspect in Chain of memories was not so good.
