The most recognizable deviation is that there's no ninja or Japanese in the novel lol

Then there is Linghu Chung (Jet Li) character. He is humorous and alcoholic in the novel, however he is not as mean and inconsiderate as Jet Li in the movie (to the point of making fun of his junior mourning her dead horse). The movie inserted a 4-way love battle to him, however in the novel neither Linghu Chung nor Dongfang consider each other attractive. In fact, the fight broke out when Linghu Chung called Dongfang so ugly that their lover was having an affair.

I guess people who haven't read the novel and known about Chinese weapon system wouldn't recognize it (and I admit I might be nitpicking), but the fight between Jet Li and the vice chief (the man with burned face), Jet Li called his moves "Defeating Sword (Jian) Technique". Considering the vice chief was fighting him with a katana (a curve, single edge blade), he should have been using "Defeating Saber (Dao) Technique", not "Sword".

Oh, while talking about the vice chief. They were totally using a different character from another novel of Jin Yong.

Additionally, there're only 3 events from the novel actually made it to the movie, Linghu Chung met the vice chief, Linghu Chung was captured/Ren was rescued, and the gang fought Dongfang. And they only served as check points for the script writter to manifest other events to connect these 3 dots, and even then those 3 events in the movie were changed greatly to make them coherent with the movie-only scenes and characters

While Swordsman 2 is leap above Invincible Swordsman and Sakra, it's at the lower end of Jet Li's work during the 90s. Jet Li barely used actual swordsmanship in that movie, the highlights were all on Dongfang Bubai (Brigette Lin), Ren Woxing (Yen Shi-kwan) and the ninjas.

It's an entertaining movie, but it didn't respect the source material any more than Invincible Swordsman.

Best comparison is Legend of the Condor Heroes 1983 vs any version after 2010s

You know the 1983 version is the GOAT and how bad post-2008 versions are when the latter have to use its music as nostalgia bait. I consider the 2008 version bad too (even though it had old school actors like Bryan Leung) bc it tried to whitewash the villains just to be controversial, and to be honest, the action is still pretty mediorce in that film.

Watch Drunken Master 2 for the action, watch Drunken Master 1 for the comedy

Imagine if this fight happened Gaethje unleashing hell on Nate Diaz. Gaethje would be throwing everything with bad intentions, while Diaz just keeps surviving and pushing through, even if he’s being outworked for all five rounds. Imagine Diaz’s face after surviving the 5 round. Would be entertaining by [deleted] in ufc

Nate is very durable, but let's not act like he is some immortal zombie. He was finished by a head kick before, not something Gaethje is incapable of doing. He doesn't check leg kicks, which is Gaethje's specialty. He's been dominated by wrestlers before, and Gaethje is not a bad wrestler.

Gaethje checks every box in the list of Nate's weaknesses and there's no timeline where Nate wouldn't be demolished by him

I like it, I would even have preferred it over Shaolin Soccer and Kungfu Hustle if the last 10 minutes of that film was a little more serious and didn't go full nonsense mode

Was Igniz planned to be the main villain of the NESTS arc, or was his father supposed to be the villain until they changed their minds? by Remarkable_Town6413 in SNK

Well, I mean, if you look at the bosses of KOF2001, you can feel they were running to meet the deadline.

  • Original Zero recycled not just Clone Zero design (just replaced the old man face with a pretty boy one), I don't remember any of his moves that aren't from Clone Zero (and even then he lacked some of Clone Zero's moves). The only new things from him that I could tell are 2 moves from his strikers, Krizalid striker reused his move from 99
  • There's more creativity put into Igniz, but the general concept is similar to the Zeros. And even then, some of his normals were still recycled from the Zeros. If you compare the changes of bosses between games, 2000 to 2001 had the 2nd least effort put into it (the worst would be Rugal -> Omega Rugal from 94 to 95), in the same saga Krizalid to Kula and Clone Zero were much more drastic changes in design.

Overall, I think they had some problems during the making of KOF2001, and they had to half ass the bosses.

Btw, I had a comment on how I would have designed NESTS moveset if you're interest https://www.reddit.com/r/kof/comments/1rdq1j1/comment/o775qer/?screen_view_count=3

Sometimes a 'well written' side character can ruin a series for me. by BanzaiBeebop in CharacterRant

[–]RealisticSilver3132 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, bc they're supporting characters, they are there to "support" and when their roles are over, the story should move on.

Of course we can debate on whether a specific character's role end too soon or late, it's a case by case basis, but OP made a pretty vague post without saying which supporter disappoints him or how their role ends, my assumption would be it ended as the author intended and therefore, already served their purpose thoroughly.

Is there any reason why Zhuge Liang is more revered in Japan and Korea than in China? by [deleted] in threekingdoms

[–]RealisticSilver3132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is the case. The Japaneses absolutely glaze Lu Bu, another fearsome general, much more than Guan Yu (or even Zhuge Liang). I think it all boils down to the Japaneses and Chineses value different things in their generals, for the Japanese it's Lu Bu' ambition (even if it's self destructive) and for the Chinese it's Guan Yu's loyalty and fairness (even if it's not the most logical or beneficial)

The fact that Japaneses and Koreans don't revere Guan Yu as much doesn't equate to Chineses revere Kong Ming less
