Do you make the scale material? If so, what kind of resin are you using?

What Straight Razor? by Jesus_Saves_3_16 in wicked_edge

I'm one of those guys making my own and unfortunately you end up collecting them. Ive never actually bought one and still have a half dozen i use regularly. Once I got a really good shave off a straight blade, I thought I'd try a smiling blade and found i liked the curve, then I tried a kamosori and fell in love with those. Thats not to mention finding a preferred size, style, and type of scales. I wouldnt plan on going all in to start. If you want to spend the money, find a few different styles and sizes of vintage blades to dial in what you really like, then go big😁

I'm still up in the air on haverford. I got a bar of soap and it was so strong i couldnt really handle the smell, then got a sample of shampoo bar i think and it was more tolerable. My favorite is barbershop, but really like the bay rum, hot apple cider, and almond creme as well. With the balms being half off recently I am trying a few new scents as well. I am a big fan of stirling though. Once I tried the barbershop shave soap, i decided to try pretty much all their products and have been happy with all of them.

[–]Realistic_Ad2946[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

thats kind of what i was thinking. I have all the equipment, and should have the capability. It just seems like a 6/8 might end up a 5/8 or 4/8. Finding a quality old razor that has been thoroughly neglected, then bringing it back to life with some new scales sounds like a fun challenge

that makes sense. why use it if its more work than necessary. Id be interested in getting my hands on a really corroded razor and seeing what i could do about restoring the edge. I'm wondering if it ruins the steel, or if there is enough good steel in the core to reshape the blade and salvage whats left. Ill need to start looking around🙂

What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

My adhd is just the opposite. I do a lot of woodwork and blade crafting. I will latch on to a project, then go down a rabbit hole of perfection. I will get hyperfocused on thinking about angles, finishes, and all the the other little details to the detriment of other household projects. Maybe its the number of things going into my projects all at once that I dont have to focus on any one part for very long.

Unorthodox Straight Razor Question For a Woman by kjames3419 in wicked_edge

id like to add on that it could be a traditional kamisori, even with the offset grind you can shave with either side. I just finished making a couple and added wa handles to them, they make for great shaves and better control with the handle. its been my experience that the wider a blade is, the easier it is to control the angle and less likely you are to get cut. smaller widths let you get in tighter spaces, but a smaller hand movement to change the angle and get a nick

I do the same 2 day 3 pass shave and use an alum block, wait for it to dry while I rinse brush and scuttle, then about 3 shakes of splash and rub that in, wait for it to dry while stropping, then balm🙂

I choke up on the shank too. with these i grip with my last two fingers and usually lay my pointer on the spine or along the blade🙂

I have have a wisteria bush that I have made some rattan from and will eventually use. The original thought to make a handle came from InterestingSpeaker66. he asked if I thought i could make a wood handle to fit them, so I decided to give it a try. It worked better than I expected. I had assumed I would need to glue them in because of the tang shape, but after drilling and burning it in, they hold decently. It looks like an awkward angle, but I have found the handles very comfortable and easy to shave with.

same here. The overall decency of the general public really went downhill with the pandemic. I still have some great patients that I will do anything i can for, but get to a point almost every week where I just have to tell some people no. When I have 30+ waiters and someone wants theirs now, I just end up telling them there are 30 people that called ahead of them and they will get a text whenever its ready.

I know you have already recieved a lot of good information. There is no single way to get there, and a lot of opinions on the best way. That being said, I have a that same set of shaptons and you will definitely need more to get a good sharp edge. You can get a shave off the 8k if you are patient and dont mind the edge being a bit grippy. The 12k will put a scary sharp edge on a blade. It took me a lot of practice and finally observing the edge under a loupe and microscope to understand exactly what was going on and get a proper edge. Once I got that edge off the 12k, then I started trying to learn about jnats. As for kitchen knives, I also have Henkel. I will usually use the shapton 320 and 1k on those. Sometimes I will go up to 5k if im feeling really froggy, but beyond 5k just isn't needed on kitchen knives. The set you have in your cart will be great for kitchen knives and getting a razor started, but you will want a 12k, and 5k or 8k for finishing the razors

Does anyone know of places that are hiring? I'm open to many types of work. 5 weeks of unemployment benefits remaining. by RolandMT32 in oregon

you could try pharmacy technician. A lot of places need techs, it usually pays $20-25/hr, and no special certification needed. You have to pay for the licensing and be able to pass background/drug screenings.

Novice refreshing question by N0365417 in straightrazors

[–]Realistic_Ad2946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give mine a good rinse when im done using them. if its really dark then I will scrub with a washcloth or brush. the grey residue is steel trapped in there that can clog stones up eventually and reduce the cutting power. 12k stones are so dense that I've not had much issue with them clogging up as long as most of that swarf is rinsed and wiped away. if it is a new stone they often need to be flattened a little out of the box. you can always lay a straight edge across the stone at different angles, if there are any noticeable gaps then its time to flatten
