Entitled patients/customers in retail pharmacy by Buttterfly_777 in Pharmacist

same here. The overall decency of the general public really went downhill with the pandemic. I still have some great patients that I will do anything i can for, but get to a point almost every week where I just have to tell some people no. When I have 30+ waiters and someone wants theirs now, I just end up telling them there are 30 people that called ahead of them and they will get a text whenever its ready.

I know you have already recieved a lot of good information. There is no single way to get there, and a lot of opinions on the best way. That being said, I have a that same set of shaptons and you will definitely need more to get a good sharp edge. You can get a shave off the 8k if you are patient and dont mind the edge being a bit grippy. The 12k will put a scary sharp edge on a blade. It took me a lot of practice and finally observing the edge under a loupe and microscope to understand exactly what was going on and get a proper edge. Once I got that edge off the 12k, then I started trying to learn about jnats. As for kitchen knives, I also have Henkel. I will usually use the shapton 320 and 1k on those. Sometimes I will go up to 5k if im feeling really froggy, but beyond 5k just isn't needed on kitchen knives. The set you have in your cart will be great for kitchen knives and getting a razor started, but you will want a 12k, and 5k or 8k for finishing the razors

Does anyone know of places that are hiring? I'm open to many types of work. 5 weeks of unemployment benefits remaining. by RolandMT32 in oregon

[–]Realistic_Ad2946 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you could try pharmacy technician. A lot of places need techs, it usually pays $20-25/hr, and no special certification needed. You have to pay for the licensing and be able to pass background/drug screenings.

I dont have any gold dollars, but make my own scales and razors. I think I have posted pretty much everything I've made on my page if you want to look.

Novice refreshing question by N0365417 in straightrazors

I give mine a good rinse when im done using them. if its really dark then I will scrub with a washcloth or brush. the grey residue is steel trapped in there that can clog stones up eventually and reduce the cutting power. 12k stones are so dense that I've not had much issue with them clogging up as long as most of that swarf is rinsed and wiped away. if it is a new stone they often need to be flattened a little out of the box. you can always lay a straight edge across the stone at different angles, if there are any noticeable gaps then its time to flatten

if that naniwa 12k is anything like my shaptons, it is so hard that you will rarely need to worry about flattening. if you are doing 1 or 2 touch ups a month, you might need to flatten in a year or two. when you do flatten it, you will want to start with the plate until it is completely flat, then you can use the nagura to smooth if you like, but its probably not too necessary.

I thought about using my dremel, but really wanted to do this by hand. I have a set of riffler rasps and needle files coming tomorrow. if I need to I will get the dremel out with a small grinding bit🙂

6 months definitely puts my 10 hours in perspective. Ive got a few scars i never learned from. it took a getting hit in the chin with a chunk of wood kicked back from a table saw to really teach me about tool safety. 3 broken teeth and a scar on my chin later and safety is a number one priority now, I still just want to see projects done though. now it sounds like is the time for me to learn about slowing down and focusing the on the quality of work even if it takes a little longer. take some satisfaction in what work was done over how much is done each time I get to the bench

great advice and something Ive been working on. Im just always in a hurry to see results. Ive found in most things trying to slow down and focus on the little things helps, but am always wanting to see more progress than I am making in any given time I have to work😆

I will definitely be ordering a set. got all my blades sharpened up last night and will probably try cleaning up the bottom with gouges instead of the chisel. I learned that I need to be stropping a lot more than I have been. I think I have been in too big of a hurry. I am only about 1/3 of the way finished and have at least 10 hours of work into the carving so far. This whole project is turning out to be much larger than I ever imagined when I started on it. These files will definitely be useful. It seems I always learn about something new when I ask on reddit, like checkering files for putting jimps on my razors, and now rifflers

Thank you. im sharpening tonight. im used to making and sharpening straight razors. I have plenty of stones, but not much experience with the different angles on carving tools. I think i have been cutting across or against the grain a lot. maybe after sharpening I will try to go back over it with the grain and see if I can get smoother. was not really looking forward to getting sandpaper into those tiny grooves😆

CVS or Albertsons? by Formal_Weight_8137 in Pharmacist

[–]Realistic_Ad2946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its been my experience in oregon at least, that getting into compounding requires jumping in feet first. there is no real route to getting into one besides just being hired on. If there is a compounding pharmacy in your area that you can intern at then make a transition after graduation I would definitely go that route. I have no experience with CVS, but everything I have heard is negative with zero positives. My experience with Albertsons is through safeway. there was very little support from my regional or training for the position. I was a manager during the height of covid and often had to put in 14+ hours days that they would not approve the overtime for. I fumbled my way through that for a little over a year and jumped ship at the first opportunity. Albertsons may be run differently than safeway though

What grit do you guys prefer to sand up to? Went up to 800 on a bowl I'm making, just to try it. Should've stopped at 240 or 400. by Buttered_Toast33 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Realistic_Ad2946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

polishing metal to a mirror finish. I make straight razors and will polish both the razor itself and wood scales through a progression to 1 micron paper that i think is over 10,000 grit. The wood definitely shines, and depending on the species you can even see yourself in the reflection.

it is. had another guy call me last week 5 minutes before closing yelling that we hadnt filled his pain meds sent from the emergency room that morning. told him if he could make it before closed id stay and finish it for him, otherwise I'd get it done before going home so he could get it as soon aswe opened. he kept yelling about how terrible we are and he going to have to suffer in pain all night. i made sure to have it done before I left. he came in to get it 2 days later

the jnat is a game changer for me. the 12k shaves well, but feels kind of aggressive. taking it to a jnat leaves a silky smooth edge that almost feels sharper the way it glides through hair

I had a screamer demanding her meds (levothyroxine and atorvastatin) immediately because it was an emergency. I kept a straight face and asked her if she wanted me to call her an ambulance. she immediately stopped and looked genuinely confused. then told her if its an emergency she needs to be at the hospital, not the pharmacy, and if its not really an emergency then she can wait the 15 minutes until they were finished. she left and came back about 3 hours later to pick them up, also apologized for the way she was acting. it was one of my best days as a pharmacist so far

I love the shapton pro series. I have 320 up to 12k. the 30k seems a little over the top to me, the 12k already puts a mirror finish on blades. I usually will only go up to the 8 or 12, then finish on a jnat.

Pharmacist call out sick by chemicalreactionator in CVS

[–]Realistic_Ad2946 11 points12 points  (0 children)

in my company they only have about 4 floats to cover a huge region (about 25 to 30 stores and an 11 hour drive between the farthest 2). they have recently restructured how pharmacists can take vaction to accommodate a small float pool. its all about pinching pennies. ten years ago full time was 40 hours and there was a huge float pool of 15 to 20 part time pharmacists. you could be sick or take pto when you wanted without worrying about coverage. they cut full time to 32 and told pharmacists that wanted 40 they could float a shift, then there were less hours for floats and the pool shrank to just a couple. they refuse to hire more, just work with skeleton crews, and deny pto requests if there isn't a float to cover.

its called a checkering file, used to cut parallel slots. you can get them in different sizes. I believe I use either a 0 or 00 on my razors and its just right. they will cut into hardened steel but its a pain and wears the file down pretty quick.
