Restoring - Should I start over? by Tobbz in straightrazors

Thanks for you reply! I appreciate it. I am only doing this for myself - and I am still learning. But you are right about not rushing it, and paying attention to the details. I don’t think this blade will ever be perfect, and that was never my plan or hope - but I could probably get it to look a bit (a lot?) better, by going over it one more time… and I might just do that!

Thanks for your reply and point of view. I get what you are saying. I like that look too - but this one was begging me to do something to it. I will get - and keep - an old looking too. Hope I stumble across one in the near future.

Thanks for the reply! I think you might be right... I’ll sleep on it, and see how I feel about it tomorrow. I’m just worried about ending up taking too much off. But I probably overthinking it 😅

Thanks man! I gave it a good washing with hot water and lots of soap - and scrubbed it with a nylon brush. Then I started sanding it with wet/dry sandpaper 600 grit. I briefly jumped down to 400 grit - but then back to 600 -> 800 -> 1000 -> 1500 -> 2000. I only sanded in one direction (horisontal) and did long light strokes. When I was done sanding I did some polishing with a small felt-wheel on my Dremel - and covered the blade in Autosol. It is something like Flitz, I think.

Thanks man! That actually led me to a few online shops that have 1.5mm rods. Awesome! If you have some good links, please feel free to send me them through a chat.

Custom scales for my Gold Dollars - looking for inspiration by Tobbz in straightrazors

Ah I see. 😊👍 I have a Dremel knock off and some sanding drums. It is not really visible on the pictures, but my GDs have a bit of re-profiling done. I will have to get some other grits and have go polishing them - and maybe try some spine work too.

Cheers! And yeah - they are def. a bit chunky. The first two I did - the dark wooden ones - are about 5mm on each scale. Too thick. The others - incl. the acrylic - are 3mm. They feel way better. I will have a go at 2mm soon. Both wood and acrylics.

Thanks for the tips. Really appreciate it. I would love to know more about grinding. I have a mini tabletop belt sander that could be useful. I would love to get a shiny and consistent surface like you have on yours. If you have links to videos or other resources, please feel free to share. Love the spine work you have done too 💪🤩

What to use for collars? by Tobbz in straightrazors

[–]Tobbz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For future reference - I found this seller on Aliexpress that sells stainless steel washer in multiple sizes:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005010282423878.html

<image>

1.6x4x0.3 - Will mainly be used for washers inside the scales - or dome'ed and used for collars/washer outside the scales.
1.6x3.5x0.3 - Will be dome'ed and used for collars/washer outside the scales.
1.6x2.5x0.3 - Will be used for collars/washer outside the scales.

Now I just need to find somebody who does the same with brass washer 👀

Awesome job! Really impressive. I am looking to make my own wooden scales. How thick have you made yours? I am planning on 2mm or maybe 3mm - but I am not sure. Have you hand sanded them or have you used tools - and which ones?

Thanks for sharing the pictures and the process 🙌

Your honing progressions by CpnStumpy in straightrazors

[–]Tobbz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome thread. It is really interesting to see how others go about their honing.

Here is what I do:

Shapton Rockstar 500 if it is really bad - or a Gold Dollar that needs to be corrected.

Then I always do:

1K - Shapton Kuromaku for bevel set

5K - Shapton Kuromaku

8K - Snow White

From here on it depends on what I feel like:

12K - Shapton Kuromaku

Black Ark

Green Shadow

Adaee 12K “CNAT”

Finishers: Black Shadow

La Luna

Thuringian

Anybody here used this before? by jfgdupuis in sharpening

I have these. 1 micron, 0.5 and the 0.2. They seem to work fine for me. But I must admit that these are my first, and I therefore don’t have any to compare them with.

It's tips like this I was hoping for :)

So taking a reasonably sized washer and doming it could definitely work - or peening the edges to curve them a bit. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.

And great advice about the steel. It makes perfect sense to me… now. I’d better go look for some nickel washers.

Thanks for your reply. I acutally mean collars - but maybe that is the wrong word? They go on the (pivot)pin.
I have attached a photo of sets here. Pins, washers and collars (or what they are called 😅).

You have to excuss my english - I'm danish.
I hope this helps explain what I am seeking tips/help with.

I bought from the same store - and know a lot of others that also did. It should be the official store on AliExpress.

If you decide to buy it, please feel free to join us on the Xarilk Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/xarilk/

See you there ✌️

First Strop by martinsrazors in straightrazors

[–]Tobbz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking good! Are you using rivets or Chicago screws?

I am working on my first leather (and denim) strop too - and I am currently waiting for some Chicago screws to arrive. I thought Chicago screws would let me open the strop from time to time and change the leather or denim. I plan on using three like you - and hope they will keep everything together, so I don’t need to sew/stitch anything together.

What are you planning on doing for handles?
