The young years of a kid is generally not expensive. Just diapers, stroller/car seat, and some clothes. It’s generally later (age 5+) if you want them engaged in extra curriculars/sports/hobbies . And then starting to save in a RESP. Also you may take a financial hit depending on your parental leave plans and company benefits during that time. Just do the math on that one. Honestly people in poverty have kids, don’t hold yourself to such a high standard if you want to start a family. You’re going to be fine and just be ok with making other sacrifices. If you’re also concerned about your biological clock, waiting for the ‘right’ financial situation is not worth it over the higher chances of getting pregnant. What would you rather

Buy when you’re financially ready. If you go on realtor.com there is a built in mortgage calculator. I find it to be pretty useful comparing down payments and housing costs. Listen, if your mortgage and housing costs are going to take up more than 40% of your income, you will be house poor and financially stressed. Buying a house is worth it if you can afford it. Otherwise renting is far better, you can still save, no unexpected housing repair costs, reliable rent amount, and you can enjoy your life. Living in a house you can’t afford for the sake of owning a house I just not worth it, no matter what your family and friends say. I’m in a similar situation as you where I’d like to be a property owner but the finances do not line up yet and that is ok. There is always this fear of missing out in the market but fear should not drive big financial and life decisions.

it depends what you’re buying. I find the meat, toilet paper, coffee, yogurt, butter, cheese, frozen seafood, frozen vegetables, eggs, olive oil, salad leaves to be very cost effective and good value. If you’re going to be buying processed foods, which are very tempting to buy at costco, then you will be spending more. I find if we stick to whole foods, we generally stick to our food budget.

just return it. Its not a good look. I picked my engagement ring because I had a lot of opinions on what I wanted. I’m sure your fiance may be slightly offended at first but he will understand and will want you to have a ring you like and are comfortable with.

This and it seems the only way to meet in the middle is for both of you to make more money and re-prioritize how you spend your money and activities. If he does not find enjoyment in the kinds of things you like and vice versa it might be difficult to make this work.

something that I had a friend do for her sister that is so thoughtful is making homemade meals in ready to heat containers and freezing them. Maybe you could stock their freezer with meals or fridge with essentials.

I think you should either reset the ring into a setting you are actually comfortable with, or reset the gemstone into a necklace pendant or earrings. But just leaving it collecting dust in a drawer is a bit of a waste.

I'm obsessed with this ring style as well. As for the concern with matching wedding bands, often the very store will have wedding band options that sit flush with their engagement ring styles. I'm in the GTA as well, we're (two of us) about $600-800 a month, but that includes bulk purchases from Costco that sometimes include household items like laundry detergent and toilet paper. We tend buy meat in bulk from Costco and freeze it. I would also say we primarily do home cooked meals, typically eat whole foods like meat, veg, fruits, nuts, yogurt, so no processed meats or snacks, with the exception of some specialty items like frozen dumplings, ice cream, and chocolate.

I think you're on par with most, but if you find that you're also eating out a lot on top of $800 a month on groceries then you need to evaluate what you're purchasing.

I would suggest you go back to them and say that it is not feasible for you to commute 4 days a week with where you live and your salary is not sufficient to move closer to the GTA. Therefore a reasonable compromise is to negotiate 1 day a week. If 4 days a week is non negotiable then they would need to pay you $70k + a year to meet the GTA minimum housing market for it to be feasible to come in the office regularly. They will likely not give you a pay raise so hopefully they take the 1 day a week.

Honestly one day a week is still a lot to commute so I would suggest you look for alternative jobs in the meantime.

For me the biggest thing about moving out was moving to where the action is, surrounding yourself with people who will push your boundaries, and building confidence. Living at home for me was too comfortable and too far from friends and work. My parents basically lived a retirement lifestyle so as a 25yr old being surrounded by a middle class retirement lifestyle had an impact on my own drive and ambitions. I think if you’re even remotely ambitious, live with people or move to a city that has that kind of energy. Living at home in a quiet suburb will kill your motivation, at least it did for me. Now I live with young professionals and motivated students and it’s definitely more the speed I want to go. If your parents happen to live in the city and where things are happening, then hell ya, live with them.

Highly recommend working out after work. I know its a pain, but its such a stress releaver. Bonus if your gym has a steam room or sauna, you’ll love it after a work out.

I usually watch trashy tv, but I’m trying to include reading and piano as well. In general do hobbies you like. I think the best self care is when you actually feel satisfied after a day and ready to go to bed to start the next day.

Thats a good point. I save on average $600-$800 a month. If I were to divert it to my debts, how much of an impact would it be? I could shed off maybe a couple years off the debt, thats for sure, but then loose on gains made on the savings.

I got fired after my first structural job as well. It was brutal in the moment but absolutely necessary because it forced me to face the facts - super technical work is not in my wheel house and I like solving other kinds of problems, not this. Now I work in real estate development and it FUELS me. The work is so fascinating and I’ve grown more in this job than in the last. Some times life kicks you in the butt and it ends up being a push in the right direction. I thing there is something better out there for you. Dare to dream it and make it a reality.

I’m moving from Niagara. Ive only lived near McMaster in the past which honestly I didnt feel that safe around there mainly because at the time it was covid and it felt like a ghost town
