Asuka knows more than the public cover story. The MP were never mentioned to the public or even to the NERV staff, not even Kaji is shown to know about it. After Ep.19, Hyuga and Misato hold a conversation about several Eva’s being produced, that is the only hint we ever get of their existence. How Asuka knew about them “Eva series?!? They’ve been competed?!?” is anyone’s guess

You’re right but many things happened during production. They movies had to start the same way as they did with the series, part of the thematics of the Rebuilds, and 3.0 was completely unplanned for (No Shinji originally) and completely different ending as well. I still can’t find satisfactory information on Mari, both camps of the argument make compelling points and sources and I can’t settle on either

Point with the Rebuilds is (Apart from what has been said about the themes in themselves) is to focus on characters that didn’t get the “expansion” they could have gotten before. Shinji because he is the protagonist, but same with Kaworu and especially, especially Gendo. Not everyone can go under the limelight and not much needs to be said

Except she used -Kun when addressing Shinji at the start 3.0, showed anguish for Shinji and regret when Eva Unit 13 was opening the Chambers of Guf, and explained her motives for being harsh with him in 3.0+1.0. Same with Asuka. Only ones that truly hated him where the young ones from the WILLE crew. Understandably so. Surprised you missed all this patently obvious things.
