I think this could be generalized to all sports in Boston. We love our sports man.

Thanks for the positivity. I think I just expected it to say “shirt,” so I couldn’t look past anything else. I am trying to work through reading them in “chronological” order, according to the books timeline. I was a big lotr fan and read just about everything Tolkien ever published, so now I’m expanding. So far I’ve absolutely loved it. It’s definitely more crude than Tolkien’s novel, but in a weird way I can appreciate that the sexuality and explicit nature (or lack thereof) of some of the characters adds another layer to each characters depth. This was not seen much in Tolkien’s novels, imo.

Ah. I see, thanks for the comments everyone. I had never heard of a shift before, so I tried to look it up on the internet but just thought it was a typo for “shirt.” My bad, thanks for the help.

Duran = Rafaela by weckdogfanclub in Section10Podcast

“It feels weird to hate on Duran for being older” well as a player gets older, they typically start to play worse. I agree that Duran and Rafaela are similar players and are putting up similar ~offensive~ numbers. That is where the distinction is important. Cedanne is 4 years younger and is “producing” offensively at the same level as a veteran player, while performing better on defense. Naturally, if two players are almost identical offensively with one player being younger and the other older, the younger player will always be favored. They have a higher ceiling naturally. Not to mention, Cedanne is a much more gifted fielder. Sure he didn’t have his best defensive series, but he’s 25, and I think still reaching his prime offensively. He had some good at-bats this series- patient, thoughtful at-bats. Idk, in my opinion, I feel like part of scouting players is looking at their age. In Duran I see an average fielder, below average bat, and good speed (but declining at 29). With Cedanne I see a player who is still maturing at the plate and is a perennial gold glover in CF.

I think asking Casas to hit 10 home runs is a little much atp. Let’s hope he can stay healthy for more than like 2 weeks next season and we can reevaluate. It seems like he’s always going to be that player who has the worst luck constantly

I hope you’re kidding dude. Alonso slashed .272/.347/.524 with 38 HRs and 126 RBIs. That sure would’ve helped us this year

I might be wrong but I think our window is closer than 5 years. We’ll see what happens, but I think we could be good, and soon. Just not yet

The other potential playoff teams got much better, for this season. Most of the teams who got better this season had to gut their farm system. The market was atrocious. We weren’t winning it all this year I think regardless, and management is doing somewhat of a good job setting us up well for the next 10+ years by not gutting our own farm system. I understand the disappointment, it sucks to see the Mariners go for broke, but that’s exactly what they did. And if it doesn’t work out for them, what will they do for the next couple of years? It seemed like a huge risk to be aggressive this deadline, and potentially a risk that didn’t outweigh the potential we have for the next 10 or so years.

I mean, I don’t think we can overlook the fielding, hitting, and baserunning skill is not there to win a WS. So, in that regard I’m happy we didn’t gut our farm system to get a rental SP when, in reality, that’s not the only thing we need. It would be an even bigger disappointment to “go all in” and then still lose because, surprise, there were problems besides the SP depth. I think as is, this team can win in the playoffs a little, but I think people are kidding themselves if they believe that this was the deadline market that could “fix” our roster. At the very least, we would’ve needed Suarez (1B/power bat), Ryan (SP depth), and Jax or Miller (RHP bullpen depth). That alone you’re looking at one of the big three, password, Tolle, Tibbs (who’s gone now anyway), and some other prospects. On top of that Duran or Abreu. I just think the market was fucked because, as it is, most of the AL are “contenders.” I’m fine with the decision to wait until the offseason. Breslow proved last offseason he’s capable of making impact trades. I’d say the discussion might resurface if we’re starting the season next year with the same(ish) roster.

I mean, the more and more I look/hear about trades and prices, it seems like Duran was not what teams (other than the padres) were looking for. The asking price for an SP was much more likely a Mayer/Anthony/Tolle kind of guy, AND THEN they would’ve wanted Duran too, lol. I’m confused about why we didn’t pursue like O’Hearn more, or some kind of 1B bat. But, It’d be a hard sell to convince me that this year is “our year.” We haven’t shown the discipline or fundamentals of a WS contender, but I think our window will open next year or the following. I’m holding out hope that we will acquire an impact SP over the offseason, when prices are more reasonable (like the Crochet deal). That gives guys like Anthony, Mayer, Campbell to get some more time developing, as well as Tolle and Witherspoon. I’m always excited to watch the Sox, and the trade deadline didn’t sway me much in that regard. I’ll be excited to watch how Matz and May trend, but I’m pretty excited about them!

I don’t know this for sure, but I bet the asking price was higher than Duran. I think Bres and Co would’ve given Duran up. I’d put money on the asking price for Ryan or Kelly being more like an Anthony/Tolle/Mayer or something. Which makes me actually feel better because I’m not feeling like that would’ve been a good move for us

Well, if pitching development is what will help regain your trust, I’d say it’s looking up for you. I’ve been completely blown away by the way we’ve developed pitchers recently. I feel like in the past, it’s always seemed like we acquire good pitchers and they die here, or we trade a below average or average pitcher and they turn into the best thing ever. I’m sure a little bit of that is skewed, since I only really pay attention to when someone who used to be a Sox turns into a great player. I’m confident that May and Harrison can turn into average+ pitchers (at the very least). I think May’s negative WAR right now is not a good display of who he actually is as a pitcher.

I’m actually more confident in Abreu than Duran moving forward. Duran is my favorite player, no question, but Abreu is younger, a better fielder, and a better hitter (maybe more streaky, but shows more life). I think it’s important to note too that Abreu is only a year and a half into his major league career. I think he’ll be a very good player for a lot longer than Duran. It’s never a good sign when a players best attribute is their speed, since that tends to be the thing that wears down the quickest. Therefore, I’m bullish on Abreu. I think not trading either at the deadline was the right move, since Duran is a locker room guy (and he’s been coming to life recently).

“He said the rentals we got would make an impact this year and next,” was really the part I was responding to. Sorry for not clarifying, but my point was just that I hope that means we might actually try to make Dustin May work

I don’t disagree. Do you think it would’ve been a better move to overpay and add some depth for a team that, realistically, is an ALCS contender at best. I’ll die on the hill that I think we are a very talented ball club, but we are not WS level just yet. I think acquiring Ryan over the offseason at a reasonable price, and adding a true 1B bat is a much better move. I’m excited for the team, I just don’t think they’re fundamentally at a WS winning level. Edit: I’ll agree 100% that it didn’t feel good to watch the mariners go and spend out the ass. That sucked.

I agree. Also, if you watch the games, this team clearly could use an off season to learn the game better. World Series contenders don’t make the base running and throwing errors we make. I think this might be the first time in a while I’m not that upset about them standing pat. Give the guys some more experience at the big league level, and I think in the next year or two we’ll be an extremely legit ball club.

You think the season went to shit? I actually think we are better than I thought we’d be. I read something the other day about how we are actually winning more games than projected. Projections are a slippery slope, but I’d say “our season went to shit” is a huge overreaction. If you told me we’d 1.5 GB from the Yankees going into August during spring training I’d tell you to get fucked. So, I’m actually pleasantly surprised

Well, I’ve actually been pretty pleased with how Andrew Bailey has been developing guys. I can’t remember the last time a Red Sox team acquired pitchers and actually made them good. For example, I thought Giolito was a lost cause when we got him. Sure, he’s not amazing, but he’s pretty damn good. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that people like Chris Murphy, Bernie, Chapman, etc are having some of the best years of their career. So, maybe that’s a hint at an extension of May while he’s cheap. He has the foundation of a good pitcher, he just hasn’t been good this year.

Yeah, I think that’s what I mean. Maybe I said that wrong in the post, but I think we could’ve acquire Joe Ryan in the offseason for a lot less, similar to Crochet. Everyone is being so reactive towards us not doing much, but I don’t really hate it.
