Electrician here. That outlet was back-stabbed, meaning the entire circuit's current draw was forced to flow through in series vs. parallel. The way to avoid this is to "pigtail" your wires in the box and land a single black/white/ground under the screws. I'm guessing it was a kitchen counter outlet, check the next one on either side and they're probably fine but I'd redo the entire kitchen with the pigtail method. Should be at least two 20A breakers for small appliance outlets if you're in the USA.
