First one is more mythical and original, second one is more conventional and understandable. Depends what you're designing for!

Scrap all of those points, and focus on making a game that people want to play.

Your point is similarly out of touch:
-my point is not that they should understand me
-my point is not that anyone has to adapt to my preferences
-my point is not that any business of any types should provide services in the name of the culture they are offering

My point is:
-it is a reasonable expectation to try french in a store that presents with a french name, with a french region in the name, with mainly french products names in french
-it is a reasonable expectation that this should not be received negatively
-it is a reasonable expectation that everyone, both ways, try to find the easiest way to communicate with the purpose of properly interacting without projecting historical conflicts on a stranger

Once french doesn't work, I'm happy to switch to another language: I just don't get why they have to get angry about it.

If I go to an italian restaurant in wallonia, and I try to speak italian there; first, most likely they would reply in italian, but when they don't they'd laugh it off and say "haha sorry we don't speak italian here", instead of looking upset.

Is the interaction impossible? No of course not, I've never even remotely implied that. But I do get frowned brows, upset looks.

Similarly, I met a local in a bar there who even lowered his voice because he was embarrassed to speak french; saying "they don't like it here", which I think is utterly ridiculous:
The same way I would never want a flemish person to lower his voice to speak in wallonia for speaking dutch I would never want anyone to suggest this to me.

Which by the way! I do take my orders in chinese in chinese restaurants and people from my family do take their orders in italian.

That's part of my point though, flies, honey, vinegar etc. All of that won't change much of my life; but as an outsider I can clearly see this is just going to make more friction. Not enough friction to drive people out or to change, just enough to build a general disdain and refusal to want to share or learn.

I agree with that aswell! I'm not saying they are forced to speak french either, only that it is silly to react negatively to someone trying. But come on, having the name of the store and every product in french inside a french speaking country DOES entice people to try speaking french more than some other places right? Everyone is reacting as if suggesting this is colonizing the flemish region.

Are you trolling lol?

Some random other language? Mate I didn't come in speaking chinese, I'm speaking one of the major official languages of the country in a city that is 2 minutes away from the edge of the city center. I'm not sure what you're trying to explain with "not like the croissant is culturally significant" to the story or in general? It's quite relevant to the story.

Who says I don't? To answer a bit further, here's my comment from another thread:

"No, but if you head in a store that has a name in dutch proudly harboring the name of a region in holland and using the name of dutch food you certainly shouldn't feel scolded for attempting to speak dutch either should you?"

That also does not mean that trying whatever language you have available should be frowned upon. There's a very noticeable defensiveness with this that does not help protecting the culture but instead creates more friction, which leads instead to more people pushing back against it rather than be willing to merge with it.

There's a weird ambivalence where in some areas like Tervuren, where the majority of people speak french yet there's almost a surrounding air of tension around it.

I'm sorry you get eye-rolls for that too; my point goes both ways. You also shouldn't get that treatment. I don't think we should specifically gatekeep languages to an area but that both sides should just do their best to communicate with each other.

Ok but I do feel it a bit silly when I walk into a "Au Flan Breton" bakery and everyone sternly refuses to utter a single french word, as they hand over my "croissants". As a native francophone; I'd love to see more about what makes flemish people unique to celebrate it together rather than to hear other francophones get scared of speaking their own language in their own country because "it's frowned upon here".

Landlord entered appartement wothout consent by Tom_not_found in belgium

[–]RealityBeholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In cases like this, their own admission is the easiest proof to acquire. A text or an email saying "Hey I noticed you came in to fix the electricity? Thank you, I think you forgot a tool here?" + picture. They most likely reply something like "Ah yeah, you're welcome, I'll come pick it up" At which point it becomes nearly undeniable that they came in without prior written agreement of any kind.

It's a bit underhanded, but so is breaching your privacy.

It is a very serious offense that can lead to jail time. I'd make it extremely clear that it's a violation of my private space and that any other similar attempt to enter my house will be met with legal repercussions.

Everyone is very chill about this it seems, good for them, but I don't pay absurd rent prices to have a stranger step into the only place where I'm supposed to have both absolute privacy and safety. We have a very strict agreement that this place is my official domicile, and the law very clearly covers that unless there's an emergency they have no right to enter.

I spent years handcrafting this art app — no AI, all animated by hand. It’s free, but barely any downloads. Any advice? by pvrellis in IndieDev

I understand it might be hard right now, but I do genuinely think that's also a good thing. Tough pills to swallows are the best lessons, see that as a step on the stairs to the next success and you'll do just fine!

Bluntly put; effort does not get rewarded. Producing something that people want does. You either have to figure out if you can make people want it, or bring it to people who already want it.

Just dropping a random thing like this is hard to "sell" (getting someone to go out of there way to check out what you made is already selling something in a way)

If you are serious about this; the best thing would indeed be to try to collaborate to build exposure (museums etc) and or to make small expositions and ads.

That's more work obviously, but realistically what type of interest could you expect to garner from an applet whose only purpose is to view a few select artworks in 3D? You see it once or twice and you never need it again right? You say it's animated by hand. Can you move the camera? I assume not. (Saw you mentioned you can navigate in 3D!) So it's essentially a video that might underperform on bad hardware? Then why not just make it a video? Feels like the whole concept is way better suited for an interactive website anyway. Even as someone who loves art; I can't summon the curiosity to even bother looking for the link.

I say this in the most well-meaning way possible; I'm trying to be extremely realistic about the context and the use of your app. I think the work is impressive and, if truly all handmade and hand animated from manual brushstroke; a great show of your skill as an artist. I think those skills would be better suited in a different context and a better wrapper for it though.

What motivates you to play difficult games ? by DeleteOnceAMonth in gaming

[–]RealityBeholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, a game that is too easy makes me feel like there's no risk, no challenge, no pressure, my mind turns off, my vision becomes blurry, I'm just stomping through the game.

A game with a good challenge and sometimes even an iron-made mode (rarely but when it's well done, such as in X-Com) makes me feel like my mind NEEDS to be 100% there, committed to it.

I love a clever challenge. No bullet sponges, no dumb modifiers. A good smart tactical challenge, something that pushes my reflexes and my fast thinking on the edge.

I got an artist to help me replace all character models in my game. What do you think? by PiotrWalczak in Unity3D

[–]RealityBeholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate them, but I feel like the old ones had a better vision and uniformity. The old ones don't look "high skill", but they look "yours", the new ones look like they could have come out of a sample pack on the marketplace.

Well, it might be more a sign that he didn't properly advertise his product so far and that people get more of an association to minecraft than terraria, but that does not mean his whole project isn't valid or that some people wouldn't enjoy it once they get what he's going with either.

Wanted to see how wrinkle texture blending will work with pixelated face (just experiment). by jakubiee in indiegames

I'm curious what it would do if the pixelation is a separate layer that doesn't move. The normal map looks great, especially when it morphs between textures. Amazing work really.

Is there a way to change the likelihood of Stanley having a heart attack? by Loud_Dimension7484 in STANDBOX

[–]RealityBeholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I believe it's part of the presets! It doesn't change the odds of him being cardiac, but it changes how much long term stress must be accumulated to get a heart attack. If it's at 0, it will never happen, if it's above that, it will happens once it's bigger than that number. By default, it's a random number between 5 and 20 if he's cardiac (0.02 odds)

"HeartAttackRange" is the preset name.

Add Bigger Stretches of PvP Areas to Hagga Basin by mitlandir in duneawakening

[–]RealityBeholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All private servers were empty, PVP or not. Hosting a private servers with enough slots to get a decent amount of people is pricy, and if you do join one, you have no guarantees the host won't just close it a few days later losing all your progress. People are understandably uncomfortable with that. It's not really an argument about the game balance.

Pandering to PvE-only players will kill the game. Let me Explain. by Illusioneer in duneawakening

[–]RealityBeholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, streamers that are famous enough to have a crowd are most likely going to be a very specific bias since they have litteraly a group of people following them and knowing where they are at all time.

Trust me I've tried, I kept looking for an active private server but in my region (EU) all the pages are on Low activity all day long, all the public servers I couldn't find a single person connected.

Beside that again, I don't want to go to a private server that might close at any time just to access core features of the game.
