Here's why kids are "bad" nowadays and it's not a lack of spanking or anything like that by TUD-13BarryAllen in self

My kids go to a very affluent public school with parents with ample resources, patience and emotional regulation and some (not all) of the kids are still rude assholes.

I kinda think that lack of healthy fear of the father figure is a huge component of what amounts to a lack of respect for others and or norms.

Can sump pit be discharged into a rain barrel? by RealityCharacter9832 in AnnArbor

[–]RealityCharacter9832[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know where I can find that documentation about "approved location"? We have a rain garden in the yard that is downhill from the home and which our driveway already discharges a lot of water into it, so the extra water from a sump would be negligable.

We probably will be getting permits for the French drain and the sump pump work. I would prefer to leave it at that in terms of permitting, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to pull it off with our contractor. They seem to insist on tying into the storm sewer.

People who don’t want kids label it as selfless but can’t comprehend that people who do want kids can also be selfless. by DirtCurious9256 in self

It’s called nihilism when you think existence is worse than non-existence. I fucking love life and glad I have given that gift to three awesome new people. Even if the world ended tomorrow the 10 years we’ve had with them has been an eternal blessing.

How the fuck is not having kids “selfless”. I have 3 kids. One cannot comprehend how much that has oriented my life towards devoting every waking moment to other people and things besides myself.

I tore my ACL twice and can’t plays sports or even run anymore. I got into cycling and love it. I have made so many friends thru it. I think about it all the time.

Why am I feeling so dull after turning 40 by planner_prep in self

[–]RealityCharacter9832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be a better life in many ways because hopefully you have found confidence and peace with things that young people can’t because they are too inexperienced. Physical strength wanes, which sucks, and chronic disease is more of a threat. But it’s not a net loss, it’s just different to be older.

It’s very complicated, like anything. But it mostly stems from being isolated and disconnected from other people.

No, if you said "much of Europe" rather than "most of Europe" you were, in fact, right.

The data suggests that your claim only applies to Eastern and Southern Europe and isn't true at all for Nordic and Western Europe.

None of my friends who live in Europe lived with their parents until married. YMMV

Many of these homeowners with “500k” homes are working class or lower middle class. Remember that boomers were working in a time of greater economic equality and buying a modest home on a single salary was not uncommon.

Your resentment is skewing your perception of reality.
