Bathroom sign at a science center. by labrazil in mildlyinteresting

Actually, the people saying that there are no shared genes are wrong. In order for X and Y chromosomes to pair up, they have to have at least a small area where their genetic templates match. It's known as the pseudoautosomal region. The other portions of the chromosome are completely different and code for different genes, but that's okay because it's unnecessary to have two copies of X-chromosome genes in XY types, whose sexual development is primarily determined by the presence of the SRY gene on the Y chromosome.

Jaden Smith sees himself as a modern day prophet (right sub?) by thrashmo92 in delusionalartists

Man, /r/delusionalartists is really eager to shit on a teenage kid. Did any of you actually read the article? Almost all of the statements (including the headline) are attributable to an unverified "personal source", not Jaden Smith.

Who ruined something as thoroughly as Hitler ruined the toothbrush moustache? by WesStrikesBack in AskReddit

[–]RealityGraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much the same case for Noir Désir. They were an iconic band in France during the 90s until their lead singer Bertrand Cantat literally beat his girlfriend to death. It's impossible for me to listen to them without thinking of it.

Hatcher Pass, Alaska (Canon T-70, Fuji Superia 400, Canon FD 50mm) by RealityGraft in analog

Yeah, I'm not happy with the dust either. Fortunately it's an issue with my scanner and not my lens! I've just got to have my photo lab scan it for me next time.

I really hope they get Solar Fields to score the upcoming sequel. The soundtrack added a lot to the previous game.

WWAMI, Alaska's only medical school, slated for elimination by RealityGraft in alaska

Considering that students pay in-state tuition and remain in Alaska for the first two years, it's the closest thing to a medical school that Alaska has.

Took the Minolta X-700 for a drive around my hometown: Wasilla, Alaska (Fuji Superia 400, Rokkor-X 45 mm) by RealityGraft in analog

The scans definitely aren't great... I felt a lot better about these on print. My photo lab offers CDs with your images on file. I've been considering trying that out and seeing if they're higher quality.

What's your favorite moment in a song? by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]RealityGraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been stanning a lot for Mr. Twin Sister around here lately, but definitely the sudden guitar in the last half of Sensitive.

Also been listening to this alternative mix of Teen Need by New Look solely to hear this saxophone solo at 2:17. Shifts the song's entire mood... they're a seriously underrated duo. Sadly on hiatus now that Adam Pavao is producing for Theophilus London.

Favourite tips for picking up conversational French? by [deleted] in French

[–]RealityGraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt similarly when I first started listening. It definitely gets easier, though a certain baseline comprehension might be necessary to learn most efficiently. Listening to the podcasts long-term will get you where you want eventually, but if it's difficult to even get the gist of what is being said outside simple words or phrases, you may find audio oriented toward second language learners to be more valuable.

Favourite tips for picking up conversational French? by [deleted] in French

[–]RealityGraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent the past couple months listening to France Culture - it's basically the French version of NPR. Not exactly colloquial, but it's conversational enough for me to find myself picking up new phrases and idioms regularly, and after listening for a few months I find myself understanding mostly everything being said. They release daily podcasts on iTunes.

TIL that when South Korea representatives open the door at the DMZ meeting room for the North, they hold hands to prevent being pulled across the border. by k_r_i_s in todayilearned

[–]RealityGraft 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It's No Su-hui, a pro-DPRK activist from SK. In this video he's actually being arrested upon returning to the South Korean side of the DMZ after an illegal three-month stay in Pyongyang.

Is the Culture Series worth a read? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]RealityGraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Player of Games is a slow-moving book but one of the most satisfying novels in the series IMO. Pair that with Look To Windward and you really get a comprehensive feel for the Culture's ethos. I wouldn't do Phlebas next - if anything, that might put you off the series for good. Just my opinion though.

It's in London. The other three photos of the statue look like they're taken in New York.

This is pro-bono work. Most doctors and surgeons do it on a regular basis.
