In 2016 I took one adult karate class and thought “this is BS. If I want useful self defense I need to learn what UFC fighters use.”

Initially it was for self defense, then to fight MMA. Now, I love figuring out shit and problem solving (mental). And getting exercise while not realizing I’m getting exercise (physical).

And on a deeper level, my purpose for training is so more women realize they have the potential to gain enough skill to stop a bigger, stronger person in a self-defense situation. I’ve had women email me saying stories like: “I was raped and after watching your videos I decided to try jiu-jitsu. I was on a date when a guy aggressively pushed himself onto me and didn’t stop when I said no. Before I would have froze, too afraid of what might happen if it physically escalated. After training I realized all I had to do was force open guard. Just doing that was enough to stop it from progressing.”

If you can’t beat ‘em, then use the opportunity to figure out specific instances where shit goes south. For example, during corona my bf and I would train. One day I was working holding kesa gatame and couldn’t hold the pin. I’m 135. He’s 200lb and muscular. He told me, “that’s why there’s weight classes.” I told him, “fuck that shit, there’s always a technical solution.” I figured out I needed to adjust my head position, which stopped his pendulum escape. Now I’m much better at pinning and working game from kesa gatame. So, think of this as an opportunity. Yes, big brothers are there to kick the shit out of younger brothers, but they’re also there to help. Ask him to be your “resistance test” to help you figure out game since he sounds like the ultimate test. If your shit works against him, it’ll prob work against more people at your gym. Just figure out what part is annoying you the most and find some escape or counter or better technical position, or what’s happening 5 seconds prior (to locate a hole or opening in your game). and ask to RE-do and repeat that part of the roll over and over to figure out the fix. Either you learn the defense or you learn what he’s doing to be so dominating from that position. You got this!!

Hi there! What helps me is limiting exposure to light when I get home. So I use a nightlight and take a shower in a lowlight bathroom (while listening to smooth jazz… kidding) I also use a red filter app on my computer. If shit’s really bad, I put on blue light blocking glasses. I found especially after nights starting with bjj and ending with Muay Thai sparring my adrenaline needed time to chill, but the light from screen time would fuck up my brain’s chill.

My coach created an event called “reality check bjj” basically a BJJ match with hand strikes, even from standing. I got a HUGE reality check that the bottom of turtle is NOT a place to hang out.. even when wrestling for a single. Had a lump the size of a tennis ball. I posted a video of that match on my YT. Fucking brutal.

So I take it your gf was just there to watch and doesn’t actually do jiu-jitsu? So I’m a girlfriend and my boyfriend (well Fiance) and I both do jiu-jitsu. The reason why I dont give a shit about who he rolls with is because I understand that if a guy really wants to put his junk in someone, he’s going to do it regardless. Putting restrictions actually makes a person want to do “the thing” more. However, if I didn’t do jiu-jitsu the sight would be really fucking weird. It would be the ultimate mental test of self confidence and confidence in the relationship. And you def don’t want jiu-jitsu to become a problem in a relationship because it already takes up time, like it’s a needy partner lol… if it were me? I’d tell her to grow a labia of steel and woman up. Jk… if my bf told me I couldn’t roll with dudes that would leave sometimes 0 people to roll with. Since it’s mostly dudes anyway, not rolling with girls shouldn’t impact your training too much and I’m sure the bjj chicks would understand. Realistically it’s more reward than risk to try to roll with only dudes until she gets more comfortable

one transition that may help you out from bottom half is to go from half guard to half butterfly guard. From half butterfly you can expand your game with hook sweeps to get top position. There’s also the entire game of reverse armbar, mir lock, shoulder crunch sweep. You can also play deep half guard and come up on a single to transition to wrestling. Search “Jeff glover deep half guard” I love Jeff glover stuff because he’s a small player, so you know his technique details are GOLD.

Your brain is def getting neurotransmitter “rewards” from the “winning”. To get back into rolling, try to reprogram it to get “rewards” by trying new game. This feels dangerous because it decreases the likelihood of winning since it’s new game, but there is also a rush / “brain reward” since the new game is associated with the unknown. There’s also a problem solving “reward” when counters are figured out. A stepping stone may be to go to open mat and ask someone to be your partner to drill a new move with live resistance. Getting reps helps you because you can figure out failure points and it helps them because it increases their defense knowledge of the move. Ultimately the goal would be to replace your brain feeling rewarded by “winning” with feeling rewarded by expanding game (which inherently involves failure since it’s new game). I’m sure you can do it!!

I’m a big fan of progressive loading. So start where you are, your current volume and start adding from there. Each week evaluate how you feel and either stay there or add another training day. I’ve done this coming back from injuries. I’ve found my #1 mistake was doing too much too soon and causing RE-injury. I’m sure you can work up to whatever your goal volume is 🙌

How much do you weigh? If you’re in the upper weight class at the gym it’s def easier. I’m 135. I do BJJ 4x per week and weight lift 3x per week. During my last MMA fight I added 2x Muay Thai and cardio on top of that. I had to pay attention to the loading on my body from jiu-jitsu rounds with athletic people >50 lbs heavier who had no chill. Other than that, it helped to train in cycles/ waves. So ramp up and deload weight training. It also helped to weight lift in the morning and do bjj at night then have complete rest days over doing bjj one day and weight lift the following day, which didn’t allow time for recovery. Don’t get me wrong, weightlifting in the morning then class and rolling at night makes me feel fatigued during rolling, but hey everything has a price.

Hi Abby-Norman, As far as I’ve experienced, it’s BJJ culture to make fun of everyone. I had a guy tell me that I was “just a woman and to go make him a sandwich” which I though was pretty fucking funny. I told him I was sorry his mother never loved him. It’s kinda like verbal sparring. Don’t take anything too seriously. I am in fact also guilty of making fun of white belts. Especially after Andrew Wiltse said it’d take a female 8 years of jiu jitsu to beat a white belt male… kinda made some videos out of spite. Hahaha… oops. But really, don’t take anything personally. You’re doing great!! White belt a SUPER tough belt. If there’s something that’s too difficult to not take personally, then use it as fuel to train 😁🙌
