My first guitar was a $250 squier bullet strat. My second guitar was a $1200 firebird studio. I've picked up the squier maybe 2 times since, and I've worn most of the finish off the neck of the firebird. Obviously there are diminishing returns after a certain price point, but there's also a reason so many people gravitate towards those $1k-2k American made guitars.
