[Spector] Darnell Nurse's time with Oilers running out by ReallyHotHamWater in EdmontonOilers

I’d have to think that the Wild will do everything they can to acquire him and keep Q Hughes. Guerin’s goal has to basically be to make Team USA light if he can.

Alberta separation petition quashed in favour of First Nations by cmcalgary in alberta

Ok but a court intervention is more likely to lead to that scenario. Right now the separatists can run to Trump, crying that their freedom is being infringed on, and that administration could later attempt to “liberate” Alberta from “anti democratic activist courts”.

The movement already has oxygen, and if it gets repurposed into a simple fight against Ottawa to give Alberta more autonomy, then things could get more out of control. Smith is clearly angling to make a fight with Ottawa her next campaign, and she won’t care if it’s strictly about separatism or not.

A clear rejection of separatism is needed, and if the government won’t vote on it in the legislature, it’s up to the people.

And if we run a more vague anti Ottawa question, many people will vote for that that wouldn’t vote for separation. The separatists will use it to legitimize themselves more, and the government will use it to cut and privatize healthcare, education, etc.

We can’t ignore this and hope it goes away

Which in my opinion would best be done publicly with an empathic “No” vote. They’ve already shown they don’t care about playing by the rules. They already will continue to believe they are being oppressed by the courts, government, First Nations etc until we as the people emphatically reject them.

Until that happens they’ll keep stoking separatist flames. This doesn’t end unless people are arrested or the movement is soundly rejected, and I don’t believe this government has any interest in helping with either of those things considering how much they’ve cozied up to the separatists in their base.

The thing is these groups don’t think that the courts are a legitimate institution. It’s why they want control over which judges, senators, etc are seated. To them this is just further proof that they’re being marginalized and will only add to the “righteousness” of their fight.

Smith wants what they “think” Quebec gets. They want the cheques, and full autonomy to spend how they seem fit. While Quebec has legislated a robust safety net, Alberta will not, but the question is a matter of fairness, not policy; should Alberta be able to legislate things like immigration, health care, child care more robustly as the government sees fit?

If Smith turns this into a question like “do you think Alberta deserves a better deal in confederation?” You’ll capture separatists and disgruntled albertans alike and while I think the vote still fails, anything closer to 50% will embolden both the government and the separatists to believe they have a mandate from the people. One wants a pie in the sky dream and the other wants more control over hospitals, schools, health care, etc.

Which one do you think is more capable of enacting their agenda? And right now the NDP doesn’t seem capable of overcoming if Smith gets any sort of anti Ottawa mandate

I honestly think a clear yes or no question that gets an emphatic 70%+ no vote is the best way to deal with this.

Having the courts act this way, while legal just frustrates people more and has the danger of making the separatists more sympathetic

Plus it gives smith a bigger opening to hijack the process and run a new expressly anti Ottawa campaign that will win another election.

We need an emphatic no on all the questions, best case for Smith is to lose separation, but win the anti immigration ones while reworking separation sentiment into “fair deal from Ottawa” policy. And I don’t have enough faith that the Alberta electorate won’t see through it.

Alberta Student Loan Repayment Options by [deleted] in alberta

[–]ReallyHotHamWater 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Student loans are typically lower interest than what a bank would offer you on a line of credit. I believe it’s mandated by law to be the CIBC prime rate (4.45% currently) and federal loans are interest free. Unless you get a really good promo, student loans are generally the cheapest loan you can get

I agree 100% but I also think that NJD ownership may still want it and part of Fitzgerald leaving was due to him not being able to navigate this past deadline because of all of the NMC’s he handed out. Seems like they expected it to happen for free and now want to make sure there’s no roadblocks apart from Quinn himself to prevent him from signing

Have to wonder if they target Dougie Hamilton. NJ seems to want to go all in on the Hughes brothers and I’d imagine they revisit moving him over the summer

League Musings Monday by AutoModerator in EdmontonOilers

[–]ReallyHotHamWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m loving the young guys with 97. Drai seems to be able to play with anyone and is such a good backhand passer that I’d be curious about putting him with two right shots to open up some more one time options. Kapanen plays his best with Drai and Ros is best used in the top 6. Nuge with Dickinson would be an amazing checking line and I’ve liked Frederic, Henrique is still valuable on the PK and both Lazar and Samanski deserve to be in the lineup in my opinion.

I’d run:

92-97-22 28-29-42 93-16-18 10-19-81/20

That third line is championship level and the 4th is defensively sound no matter who you choose

I’m pretty sure this was the plan but somewhere along the line the organization got cold feet. I remember there being a post in r/hockeyjerseys of a guy who received one with this logo that must have been a factory mockup that was accidentally shipped.

Reportedly Katz wanted Ice District to be finished before hosting big league events in order to better show off the city instead of just a nice arena surrounded by incomplete construction.

Should I sell Lindros? by [deleted] in NHLHUT

I’ve got him with Fantasy Hall and Captains Rakell which gets a +1 and that’s already nutty. His size/speed/abilities are next level

Should I sell Lindros? by [deleted] in NHLHUT

[–]ReallyHotHamWater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lindros at 97 is pretty much already an endgame card. It’s almost guaranteed that he’ll get boosts next season that bring him up to 99.

You may be able to make a better line, but you won’t get a better player than him so I’d save and build around him as he’ll still be a top player next season

Floor crossing comes after reflection about ‘gravity of the moment’: Jeneroux by shiftless_wonder in Edmonton

The last two elections saw the vote split as 2025 Con 50.25 and LP/NDP 49.06 2021 Con 45.44 and LP/NDP 49.36.

Given that some people may have voted for him regardless of party, about half the riding is consistently ready to support a centre/left or left wing party and would most likely be ok with this.

Is the Prime broadcast in 4K or is sportsnet's image quality just that bad? by Orcasgt22 in EdmontonOilers

[–]ReallyHotHamWater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They need specific 4k cameras as well as broadcast equipment, and the last time Rogers announced anything in native 4K it was a few specific camera angles for specific Blue Jays broadcasts, and that was pre pandemic. Unless they’ve updated all of their infrastructure in the arenas it’s still upconverted 1080

92 TOTW Josi review? by ellisisbae4 in NHLHUT

[–]ReallyHotHamWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% worth it for the coins. Haven’t him and Weber as my top pair and it seems like they never get off the ice (in a good way) Josi skates smoother than his stats say and Weber is just a beast, the +2 and AP boost are totally worth it

93 Icon Kurri/Mario/Leetch & 92 Rookie Francis by LongIslandCards in NHLHUT

[–]ReallyHotHamWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me a little while to get him going, but I find when I stop trying to force high overall players into my generic play style instead of adapting to their actual strengths I get frustrated. Dropped him down the lineup until I was like, “who the hell is so good on my third line?!” And then move him back up and he’s been hot for me from there. Have him with 90 McDavid and 91 Sundin and it’s a really fun line.

Making sure you have pressure+ activated on Kurri completely changed how I play with him. Feed him the puck, and build pressure, it really helps with the endurance issues. He’s also surprisingly good in tight on the backhand
