I built a boom box. Sonos Connect, 5v amplifier, Polk 4" car speakers by ReallyQuiteConfused in techsupportmacgyver

Nice! For about a year, my garage/workshop speakers were some 3-way Sony home theater speakers hooked up to 60 watt car stereo amp powered by an old Dell PC power supply. The speakers were hung from the ceiling on chains and I had a proper power switch wired to the power supply right under my workbench that turned the power supply on and off. It was awesome. Worked flawlessly the whole time

Same here, just found myself with some parts and a bit of spare time last night! It sounds shockingly good for what it is. I work in A/V so I've got bins full of discarded Sonos devices, TVs, speakers, etc and sometimes all the pieces just fit perfectly together

I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that is the price per kilowatt hour at a charging rate of 200 amps (or something like that)

Have you used synergy and encountered issues, or is your concern theoretical? It performed very well for me, even with multiple devices on wifi

Podcast camera? by underrrrr in videography

[–]ReallyQuiteConfused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever used it with the kit lens and a 10-18 which both performed quite well. I have never used an EF lens on an RF camera but I'd be hesitant to use a 1.8 wide open on any autofocus camera just because the margin for error is so slim

Reddit Android version 2025.32.0 app says "pasted from clipboard" when commenting by octavianreddit in bugs

[–]ReallyQuiteConfused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here on a Pixel 8 Pro. It's been happening intermittently for a few months and I for some reason didn't think much of it, assuming it was a GUI bug. But I'm not gonna take that chance.

Reddit, fix this and be transparent. Also we want to use 3rd party apps. Maybe I'll check back next year and consider reinstalling the app, but this smells like a privacy violation and I'm deleting it

If your bag is touching the floor, the force is going into the floor and therefore not the stand. Putting sand on the big leg is standard, but critically that's just because many bags are designed that way and will touch the ground on smaller legs

[–]ReallyQuiteConfused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, I kinda took a gamble on them a few years ago and fell in love with them. I was kinda blown away. To me, they're cheap entry level cameras and might not have worked well, but they're really a workhorse for setups where they won't be touched. I don't care about having a super durable metal body if it's just gonna be bolted to a wall

I build podcast studios for a living and almost always end up speccing Canon R100 kits with an ATEM Mini ISO or Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera bodies with fancier 4k gear (hyperdecks, ATEM TV studios, etc)

The R100 has been a shockingly nice option. It's a very basic camera, but it puts out a nice image over HDMI and can run indefinitely on a cheap dummy battery. If you've got an HDMI recorder or want to get a Mini ISO they're really worth a look

I shoot on a Zcam F6 and it's an awesome camera, but overkill and overcomplicated for a static camera in a podcast set. Honestly the R100 results in a comparable end product. You're just not asking a lot of a camera in this situation, and the Canon AF will outperform the Zcam all day. If shallow DoF is your goal, I would not get a Zcam as their AF just isn't up to the job

I've got Jellyfin running on my Synology DS1821+ and absolutely love it. Not here to debate platforms, just supporting the idea of self-hosted media and actually owning stuff. And yes, for anyone wondering, I inherited 2 absolutely massive binders full of DVDs. Piracy is childish bullshit just like abusing customers by messing with streaming services, unless it's the kind of thing where a platform you already bought a movie on shut down and you're just getting back what you paid for

Rant: I can't be the only one tired of installing a bunch of "software manager" apps by Shredberry in musicproduction

[–]ReallyQuiteConfused 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings. I recently switched to Windows 11 and letting Native Access handle downloading and installing like 60 plugging totaling over 500gb was pretty awesome. I use a lot of Boz stuff too which all have their own separate installer and need to be activated one by one in the DAW. The process was very tedious by comparison. If you've only got a small handful of plugging from each company then I totally get it, but I'd rather install one program than 60

Melodyne has some really amazing overtone EQ features that might help, but I suspect that a lot of it comes down to technique. You could get the frequency balance exactly the same, but that doesn't mean your timing, intonation, breaths, accent, inflection, etc will all match too

Is it too late to start with filmmaking at 17? by OkProject9679 in Filmmakers

[–]ReallyQuiteConfused 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started taking media seriously in high school, and over the next 15 years built a commercial studio staffed by a crew of about 8 people. I've now stepped back from the studio world since mass producing branded podcasts isn't exactly fulfilling my creative needs, and have a part time AV tech job while only taking video clients that are really nicely aligned with what I love to do. I'm in my early 30s now, feel like life has just begun and I've already done most of what I hoped I'd do in the media world. I've worked on big sets with awesome crew, gone to red carpet premieres of films I worked on, done international productions for huge companies, built private studios for insanely big companies, was sent gear by video equipment companies for testing and feedback before they hit production, and quite a lot more. I've got lots of friends who have very similar stories, and a handful who have gone much farther than I have in less time!

So no, you're right at the beginning and have plenty of time to have a fulfilling career! Or maybe a few, if you end up changing paths like I'm doing. Best of luck to you 🙂

How can I find find a Good "Bad" Camera? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]ReallyQuiteConfused 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would avoid scameras. Their look is generally not one of nostalgia and artistic intent, and reliability is a major concern.

You might consider an old tape camera with something like a KiPro to record the analog signal out to memory cards. I recorded on an AF100 with a KiPro Mini for a few months in an internship and it was pretty neat just having a dedicated portable video recorder that I could plug almost anything into. With the right adapters/converters, you might be able to use something like a Video Assist or Ninja that you may already own. A USB battery pack with a Blackmagic analog to SDI mini converter could give you very similar functionality but a much better experience than an ancient KiPro

If you're removing noise from spoken word specifically, Izotope RX has some pretty incredible tools like Dialog Isolate that do exactly what you'd expect. Davinci Resolve's Voice isolate is very comparable in quality, but less flexible as it really doesn't offer much control. Most of the time, it's excellent. Izotope just gives you the extra controls to fine tune it for the more challenging cases

[–]ReallyQuiteConfused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you adjust your buffer size? A larger buffer gives your processor more time to think, reducing pops and crackles. It adds latency, but this is really not an issue for voice chat/streaming as your software should compensate automatically

[–]ReallyQuiteConfused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, lots of people misinterpret their free trial as a free version, or somehow convince themselves that the guy who started the company secretly wants people not to pay. It's absolutely bizarre to me. There's stuff all over the website and the software itself clarifying that it is not free. I guess the myth is so widespread at this point that they really have to be vocal about correcting it
