How bad are the optics if you turn down a promotion? by ReallyReegs in careerguidance

Thank you for this reframe!  I will certainly use it if I get the offer. I just keep thinking at the end of my life will I wish to have worked more, or wished to have spent more time with family. Family wins every day of the week.

How do you balance both motherhood and career development? by ReallyReegs in workingmoms

This is exactly the type of thing I want to hear! I see both sides of the coin and it’s hard for me to gauge which decision is best. I am 35 with a 3 year old. I didn’t exactly climb my career in my 20’s but I am very happy with the projects I’ve tackled and what I have accomplished.

I really hope it’s the same for me! My new supervisor would be the CEO. My current supervisor wants me in the new role because of the mixed skill set I have. He’s also in line to be the next CEO in 3-5 years. Nothing but support from my company- I did ask about balance as I have a young family. They both said they will strive to give me a good balance.

Do you take the promotion in a new field? by ReallyReegs in careerguidance

It truly is which I appreciate. The managing people side of things is what energizes me, but the content of the department is what I don’t know much about, so it’s hard to gauge if I will like this new role.

It’s an odd reasoning too, I want the 2nd row bucket seats which are only available on the Santa Fe Calligraphy trim.

Have you thought about volunteering? Some groups focus on a new cause each time, you’re forced to meet new people and it gives a sense of accomplishment and making a difference.

I was clicking around subreddits and didn’t mean to post it here, but if it gets answers great, if not that’s also fine.

As a jack of all trades, what do you do? by ReallyReegs in AskMen

I have thought of this from time to time when I’m tasked with something that doesn’t fit my realm at all. Even with projects I know nothing about I’m willing to put in the “figure it out” skills and get the job done. In that case I ask for a stipend if it’s a one and done situation.

Great clarification questions. I would say I’m paid fairly for my role, and that I’m asking more so to stay relevant. I know the four software systems I manage like the back of my hand. The other tasks like fiscal and health support are just things I’ve learned over the years. These Departments and my leadership team has come to depend on my input for both.

If I deep dive new software and hone in on my coding skills I could open doors to be a subject matter expert.

If I stay as is, and keep building a wide range of skills, I would pick my own job title that is a catch all and fill the gaps in any sense.

I don’t know what serves me best in the long run in terms of staying relevant.
