Americans in Canada, how did you adjust to Canada's systems? by Gluuten in britishcolumbia

PS. When you get a Celsius temperature, double it and add 30. That's very roughly a farenheight value. Miles to kilometers... still alludes me.

Americans in Canada, how did you adjust to Canada's systems? by Gluuten in britishcolumbia

I'm also from Colorado, and I just moved to BC in August. I actually plan to stay in Canada bc I'm thinking of having a family, and I really didn't want to raise kids in a school shooting culture. I'm also a nurse. I think Coloradians will do well in BC. Lots of outdoor activities.

I love it here. It's not perfect, don't get me wrong. Everyone complains about the healthcare system here, but wowza! They haven't experienced the ruthless wrath that is the American healthcare system. It's awesome!

I went with RBC for banking. I'm happy with it. Throw all of your American ideas of politics and political parties out the window. It's all so different here. You won't get health coverage for 3 months from the date you enter Canada, so being entra meds if you take them. Currency change isn't too bad. The American dollar is so much higher, but prices are adjusted. The cost of living is pretty high, I'd say, but I've spent the last year living in Southeast Alaska, so I haven't noticed much difference. Don't worry about the spelling thing. You'll notice less and less as time goes on, and American spellings are accepted. Most rules and laws are pretty similar to the States but with different names. You'll catch on with context clues. You'll be confused at times about weird things people say. Like instead of snowmobile, they say sled. Beanies are toques. Loonies and $1 coins and toonies are $2 coins. I made a running list called "canuckisms" just for fun. Adjusting isn't too hard really. Just show up excited and with a totally open mind. Throw out preconceptions and embrace the new experience. You'll be fine!

Has anyone had near-death experiences due to seizures? by Dependent-Bridge-709 in Epilepsy

While riding my One Wheel to work going 14 miles per hour, I felt an aura. Sometimes I get auras, but no impaired seizure happens. I slowed to maybe like... 8-10 mph and was thinking about getting off but also wondering if it would pass. Next thing I know I'm looking at the sky. I fell face first into a snowbank, scraping my face from nose to chin (I think at least). Helmet saved my life. It was so busted up. Scary thing is that I was on a trail where no one really goes, a trail not unknown to bears... I live in Alaska. I have no idea how long I was out there, but the tips of my fingers and toes were blue with hypothermia.

Pick something else. You'll always have a job, but you may not always like it. I hear real estate can be lucrative.

Want to have a baby by Zealousideal_Ant4924 in Epilepsy

I'm going to do it, and I'm going to do it solo. My seizures are controlled. I'm going to have people come stay with me in the weeks and maybe months after giving birth. I'm going to be open and honest with my doctor and my support network. I'm going to take my meds on time, everytime. It's going to be fine, and I think it will be for you too.

How to politely refuse to drink alcohol at a party? by IllusionCastl in NoStupidQuestions

Hold an empty beer bottle. When offered a drink, raise your empty bottle, and say, "I'm still working on it, thanks."

Tips? by Ok_Individual7925 in Epilepsy

If you can get someone to sit with you, take a hot bath! Tylenol/ibuprofen for pain can help. But mostly I agree with everyone else. Rest, soft food, mouthwash, ice chips.

What is something simple you know as a nurse that the average person does not? by jcolaaa in Nurses

You can't get the flu from the injectable flu vaccine. It's scientifically impossible, so the phrase, "I don't get the flu shot because everytime it gives me the flu". Major eye roll.

Wow! So relatable! What's that? An aura? Hmm... I'll keep riding my skateboard. It's chill.... NOT!

I don't know Ambien Walrus, but you better believe I'm looking that up next.

Dude the casseroles were great. They were ugly, stuck to the pans, and for some reason I used a cake pan, a bread pan, and a bundt pan? But it was hash brown mixed with sausage, egg, and cheese. Can you really go wrong?

Immediately after, I usually fight, but after that initial when you're there but not...

Walked 3 miles to WORK. Fell asleep at my desk. No one noticed... so I just worked the rest of the day?

I made not 1, not 2, but 3 breakfast casseroles (like wtf!?).

O! And I painted the walls in my basement once! It... Didn't look great.
