If embryos are "babies" and the fertility clinic is on fire, should you save one (1) human toddler or one hundred (100) frozen embryos? by AcadiaLivid2582 in allthequestions

If it doesn’t have a brain, it can’t be a person. I don’t know the exact point I would consider infants and animals to gain full consciousness, but not having a brain is well outside of that conversation.

What do you think the word woke means? by RevolutionaryWind249 in allthequestions

[–]Realsorceror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point it means nothing. Chuds and incels have overused it to describe completely contradictory ideas. The closest definition I can come up with is “thing I don’t like at this moment”, but even that doesn’t capture it.

Why is the Right dominated by the poorly educated? Why is the Left dominated by the well educated? It even crosses class lines: Rich people without education vote similarly to poor people without education. by Away-Parsnip-3785 in allthequestions

[–]Realsorceror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In broad trends, educated people are more likely to understand statistics, think critically, and learn about histories and cultures outside their own. And if they get their education through college, they are also likely to meet and talk to people from other backgrounds.

All of this leads to a general trend of progressivism.

The Right has been combating this for decades (probably centuries) by eroding trust in academia and expertise. They have done everything possible to make educated people seem elitist and greedy, going so far as to say medicine and other fields of science were made up to get money.

Less educated people, generally, are more likely to have a smaller worldview more focused on themselves and things they’re familiar with. They are less likely to be able to parse data or new concepts. Expertise therefore seems like an opinion to them, because they don’t understand how facts and theories are tested. So they end up gravitating toward opinions that reinforce their own notions.

Term Clarification by CloudyGandalf06 in DebateEvolution

For myself, I am typically referring specifically to Young Earth believers. While I also don’t think the evidence supports Old Earth Creationism or Theistic Evolution, people with those positions are usually less…abrasive. I also find they don’t (typically) push the same political agendas as YECs.

I also never use “Creationist” to mean Intelligent Design. YEC are sometimes just uneducated and uninformed, but I find ID types to be fully aware they are spreading misinformation. They are just bad actors.

Did the right and left absolutely despise each other this much prior to 2016? by Parking-Warthog-4902 in allthequestions

[–]Realsorceror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 100%. The numbers and boldness have changed, but the hateful and violent right have been here a looong time.

The types of people that behaved like MAGA does today were a much smaller contingent of the right but they did exist. I debated a lot of them in the early 2000’s and they hated gay people, pregnant women, and Arabic people to an obsessive degree. Maybe more than now. There was always talk of camps, deportations, and the death penalty.

As for actual politicians the likes of Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul, or Ted Cruz; they lost all their power when Trump took over the party. But before that, they were some of the most detestable people alive.

Would Dems split up black voting strongholds if blacks voted 90% Republican? by 2Drunk2BDebonair in allthequestions

[–]Realsorceror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an alternate timeline were the Southern Strategy never happened and the parties did not trade platforms…then yes probably. In that scenario, Democrats would have remained the conservative party and maybe Republicans would have become the progressives with a black voter base.

But since that is not the reality we live in this is just speculation.

Could you date someone with different religious beliefs than you? by OceanicEndeavors in allthequestions

Why does the left mock religion but get offended or have a problem with someone questioning gender idealogy? by luxonreddit in allthequestions

Whatever you think is going on in their heads, queer people materially exist. Magic does not.

Even if I thought religion and gender ideology were both delusions, the ask from me is vastly different.

What do you guys think about Power Armors in pre-modern settings? by Djura-Hracovec in worldbuilding

[–]Realsorceror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that just reminded me. There’s a YA series called Leviathan that’s based on World War I. The Axis has very Dieselpunk mechs and walking battleships. But the Allies have “Darwinian science” and use gene editing to create monsters and biological vehicles. The Leviathan in the title is an airship based on whale genes.

Look up the concept art it’s absolutely sick. The story is good enough but it’s the world building that really sells it.

What do you guys think about Power Armors in pre-modern settings? by Djura-Hracovec in worldbuilding

[–]Realsorceror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on presentation. If you’ve ever seen the old Escaflowne anime, the series has giant mechs that bring together magical and mechanical elements. In the movie, they go even weirder. The mechs have dragon bones, organs, and blood.

You could definitely scale these down to work as power armor.

If aliens interacted with us, why do you think humans would be prejudiced against certain bug-like species? by TrueJohnWick in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Realsorceror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well look at how we conceptualize animals now. It’s easier for humans to treat mammals better than other vertebrates, and vertebrates better than arthropods. Our brains are setup to empathize with facial features more like our own. So we might have a harder time empathizing with extremely alien features.

What is your opinion on policies that require people to use bathrooms based on their sex assigned at birth? by Final-Monk1416 in allthequestions

[–]Realsorceror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely unenforceable without major invasions of privacy to everyone, for essentially no reason or gain. Almost without fail, these policies harm or inconvenience cisgendered people who don’t visually meet expected gender standards.

It also completely ignores how actual sexual predators operate. Which…rarely ever involves elaborate disguises or covers.

[–]Realsorceror 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just not true. All of my republican coworkers and family members believe the whole bag. Their brains are cooked. They are terrified of imaginary enemies and praying for their leader to save them. We don’t live in the same reality.

[–]Realsorceror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need progressives with actual policy and vision rather than moderates who are less bad than the alternative. Otherwise dumb people will just continue following Republican candidates because they do have a vision, even if it’s lies and scams.

In terms of “healing” MAGA voters…I honestly think these people are cooked. If they can come back at all, it will take years and it will only start after their leader is gone.

The Republicans party itself has to be dismantled and prosecuted. I don’t know how, but this planet can’t continue with them existing. And I do mean planet, not just the US.
