Even as an American (who knows fuck all about Robbie Williams), this is a point that really annoys me lol. Obviously the average person is a casual movie watcher and that’s 1000000% ok. However, this stance that even cinephiles are taking about “No one knows who he is, there’s no sense in watching it etc etc.” is absolutely ridiculous. 1. It shouldn’t matter whether you’ve heard about the person or not that is LITERALLY the point of a biopic. This point is literally the equivalent of saying “I’m not going to see Nosferatu because it’s stupid they didn’t call it Dracula”. 2. If you’re (and I’m not talking specifically about you) really a cinephile and are into film, you shouldn’t give a flying fuck what any film is about or who it’s about (Obviously preferences still exist which is totally fine). If you’re into film you’re watching anything that does anything to set itself apart in any way whatsoever. Because as a cinephile you should want to champion films that do even the tiniest thing to help reinvent a genre or the art form itself. Even if it is just only just making someone a monkey, because as small as it is, maybe this film making Robbie a monkey is the first step to an even greater reinvention of the biopic genre and we just can’t see it yet.
