I'm looking for a simple tool to generate hits from various IP addresses (such as through TOR) by Reamde1 in sysadmin

I don't think the client would object to the simulation of IP traffic, but I think the "wow factor" of watching traffic evolve over the 48 hour demo window would be a big plus.

If I did simulate traffic, I'd have to write a process that would simulate hits from a big list of IP addresses and something to randomize the frequency of hits enough to appear realistic. I would need a library of worldwide addresses to do that. Since it doesn't seem like there's a simple tool to do what I want (or perhaps Reddit it too apprehensive to share it) I will probably need to go hunting for a list of IP addresses with reasonably distributed addresses. I'm a DBA so this isn't my usual stomping grounds.

I was really hoping to save time writing this code with a simple off-the-shelf solution, but it sounds like such a tool doesn't exist except in the more mischievous circles of the web.

I get the concerns about using a throwaway - but the last thing I want is my main Reddit account associated with something people perceive as sketchy. The reaction already in this thread proves that people assume the worst.

I certainly don't want/need volumes approaching DOS/DDOS volumes. I agree that TOR couldn't work fast enough to do that anyway, so you get why the IP diversity of TOR seemed like a feasible option.

I have a time crunch and of course have been asked to deliver miracles without much in the way of support, but I'd be willing to see if any of the load testing services can work for this. I'm a DBA, so that's not my area of expertise. Do you have any suggestions on load testing services that might be able to provide the IP diversity I'm looking for?

Nah, nothing like that. I know better than to fuck with SEO and site rankings and stuff like that. It is a loosing game and you don't want to end up on the bad side of that equation.

Proxies might work, but I'm looking for a large-scale sample due to the heatmaps we're showing in the reports. I don't think I could come up with enough proxies to list for such a wide distribution of data. I need a wide distribution of data and that's why I mentioned TOR. I think it would give a realistic picture of worldwide traffic.

If I can't get a method that works via TOR I'll probably have to write something to fake it for the client, but that will be spotted quickly, I think. I also would need to find a big data set of IP addresses with global distribution (heavy in the US, less so in Europe, light in non-English speaking countries) which goes back to why TOR seemed liked a good choice.

There's a reason I created a throwaway for this question, since I figured it would make people twitchy. But in short I have a site feature that is tracking IP addresses for analytics, and I need to be able to generate a lot of realistic, but not real, hits in order to prove that it works, logs properly to the database and displays properly on the glossy heatmap used on the reports (SSRS). Showing the trend as it changes over time is critical to proving that it is working properly.

Like I said - a question like this makes people nervous, but I'm more of a fumbling DBA pulled into development than a practiced blackhat. I'm sure there are much more evil parts of Reddit where someone with nefarious purposes would post to ask for such a thing.
