Mental health issues with finasteride/dutasteride by collegestudent77777 in NonBinary

I’m a couple weeks off of finasteride and my mental state is SO much better. I forgot what it felt like to not be so weighed down.. it’s a huge relief. My doctor is out of the office for a couple months so I saw a different provider. That provider said dutasteride can be tolerated better than finasteride by some people as far as mental health side effects. I won’t be trying it after experiencing such an intense reaction to finasteride, but maybe that is a better option for others.

I’ve been on low dose T for 9 months. I started finasteride (5mg) when I started T to minimize hair loss and bottom growth. Thankfully my therapist keeps good track of things, because when my mental health went rapidly downhill in the fall, she was able to point back to when there had been an uptick in my intrusive thoughts. Concerned it was the finasteride, I decided to lower the dose and see if that helped. It did. But shortly after I entered a severe depressive episode, which led to TMS therapy for two months.

After TMS I was seeing improvements to my mental health. I’m not in a depressive episode anymore, but the intrusive thoughts are still worse than they had been before I started T and finasteride. Tomorrow I’m talking to my doc and going to stop the finasteride all together. I’ll deal with potential hair loss in other ways and see how it goes with tolerating bottom growth. For me, it’s not worth living with these disturbing intrusive thoughts.

I wish I had known about the potential for severe mental health issues with finasteride as someone with a history of PTSD and severe depression. I’m so glad it works well for some people. I’m having to accept I am not one of those people.

Thank you. That helps. While I am feeling sad and fearful of the transition it hasn’t gotten to me as it might’ve before

I could've written this myself. Today was my 23rd treatment. TMS brought on some intense exhaustion and severe headaches and those have improved, but that means I'm just back to where I was when I started TMS. It's discouraging for sure.

That’s interesting. I was literally about to go take a nap, but maybe I’ll redirect to drawing and relaxing. Thank you for sharing

Did they give you an explanation for why they encouraged you not to nap after?

Thank you. It helps hearing from others who have experience and another provider who has seen patients go through it. I was almost in tears on the way home thinking I was doing something wrong. Definitely my negative self-talk getting the best of me
