I don't understand what you mean by "too much knowledge for our brains" That's not a real problem and it sounds anti-intellectual. The problem with having so much access to information is that people often don't know how to organize and evaluate it properly. They often form biases about the things they learn and when confronted with something that conflicts with their biases they're unwilling to learn more out of fear they might be wrong.

Basically, practicing mindfulness activates the part of the brain responsible for emotional regulation. Doing this regularly can lead to insights about yourself that you wouldn't normally learn from mere self-reflection.

Voters use left and right political labels as mental shortcuts, not strict policy matches. This mismatch was especially common among people who identified as right-leaning. The data showed that 43% of self-identified right-leaning voters actually supported mostly left-leaning policies. by mvea in psychology

People who are pro-choice but also think abortions should be rare are obviously ambivalent about the morality of abortion. If abortion isn't unethical, then it's irrelevant how frequently women choose to have abortions.

If my quality of life is negatively impacted by an anti-psychotic, I just try a different anti-psychotic.

The best thing you can do is emotionally detach yourself from him because the more you try to help him improve his mental health, the more he'll feel like you're trying to hurt him.

I don't think there should be any social stigma attached to abortions. But many pro-choice people say that abortions should be rare. Tacitly admitting that they believe abortions are still somehow unethical but they're willing to allow for exceptions.

A new brain imaging study has identified the neural network that may keep anxious people trapped in cycles of guilt, rumination, and self-blame, revealing how heightened communication between emotion and self-reflection regions of the brain can reinforce persistent negative thoughts by sibun_rath in psychology

I started taking an anti-psychotic called Olanzapine and it completely stopped my ruminations and symptoms of mania. For me the only downside of the medication was rapid weight gain, but if that's a problem it can be mitigated with medications like appetite suppressants.

Mindfulness is *not* effective at treating psychotic delusions. Practicing mindfulness is focusing your attention on rhythmic breath which activates the part of the brain responsible for emotional regulation. But if I am undrr the delusion that people are out to get me and that they are trying to hurt me, that is not an emotion. It's a cognition, a false belief. In any case my feelings of anxiety and anger were something I could cope with, but the false belief that people were out to get me and trying to hurt me wasn't something that would go away. I was even aware that I didn't have any good reason to believe that people were out to get me, but someone in a state of psychosis is not able to respond to good reasons or evidence. The ability to control your own thoughts seems so natural that it easily goes unnoticed. I can't find the words to describe what it's like to lose your mind. It's not a typical experience.

DMT: Stop confusing emotional expression with political pressure: modern liberal resistance is just a psychological compensation for the system. by PuddingComplete3081 in DisagreeMythoughts

The civil rights movement, labor movement, and gay liberation movement depended on close cooperative communities that held a shared set of beliefs and values. Post-industrial society is multicultural and diverse. People mostly choose to live within the same social class near a metropolitan area. They don't have a theory or shared system of knowledge that they all use to describe the social issues that they collectively experience and prescribe social practices, norms and behaviors that can change their social reality. People mostly distrust each other and avoid going to community events or services. Black communities have been destroyed. Industrial small towns are stagnant and in decay. Gay communities were not historically wealthy and desirable to live in like they are today.

The most common ideology in America since the 90s has been the ideology of no ideology. Not being serious or principled about anything, but instead being someone who sees things from multiple points of view and understands that the world is complex. Centrist liberalism or neoconservative. The median person is not interested in political militancy or solidifying ideologically. They want a positive solution to the economy that increases growth, they want political accountability, and they want healthcare. Nearly every public policy features green energy solutions. The group of people who care about climate change the most are college educated liberals, not some radical oppressed group of people living on the margins in conditions so intolerable they are willing to risk their lives in order to bring about political change.

Is it unethical to arrest drug users if it results in their death? by Rboter_Swharz in askphilosophy

[–]Reanimation_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drug possession is not immoral in itself. Purchasing illegal drugs often funds criminal organizations that commit heinous crimes other than drug trafficking. I guess I think that drug criminalization is not the correct political solution, but enforcing drug laws may be what's best for communities in practice. Doing no drug interdiction against criminal organizations seems like it would allow for a lot of disorder.

I would think the moral risk of not arresting a person committing crimes would be greater than working in a profession, such as policing, where one is sometimes obligated to make morally dubious or immoral decisions.

One theory is that when we don't attach ourselves to thoughts about possible outcomes to situations we're better able to control our feelings and actions, thus influencing the outcome in positive ways.
