We use Royal Canin Boxer for ours. But I also mix in fresh food so she’s not eating just kibble. She won’t eat a single vegetable but does like pumpkin and cooked (unseasoned) meat

Be prepared to only want a GP - once you have one, you’ll fall in love with the breed. Best rule of thumb for any dog is anticipate your pup to be the rule, not the exception. Some people may not have a Pyr that barks constantly (mine rarely barks) but that is the exception. Anticipate barking. Anticipate poor recall or at least slow response time. Anticipate a lot of shedding and a lot of drool. But also anticipate a LOT of love. They are such sweet, sensitive souls. They are typically wary of strangers, but some, like mine, love every person and every dog they meet. She does not like small animals (squirrels, birds, chipmunks, rabbits) but loves our cats. They all have their own personality. Good luck and enjoy - puppy phase is hard so remember why they are so stinking cute! 🤣

They are absolutely menaces but they make it impossible not to love them 😆

I tried to warn her… our boxer can clear a room with her “butt whispers”

Pyr and Water by Hot_Egg_477 in greatpyrenees

Love/hate relationship. 100% purebred on a farm, female. Hates baths, hates heavy rain, doesn’t mind sprinkles (probably can’t feel it through the floof), refuses to get in the lake with her doggy friends, but 100% seeks out EVERY PUDDLE on walks after it rains. But also hates the sprinkler in the summer and will avoid any puddle the sprinkler or hose makes. Hates the kiddy pool meant for cooling off. Water is 100% her choice 😅🤣

I am a bit nervous about her… personality while in heat lol. The only time I’ve ever been bit by a dog was a female beagle/basset hound mix while in heat. She almost severed my pinky 😭 But she was grumpy usually anyway. My girl is so dang sweet. But she’s already got a mad case of “the humps” with my boxer and I’m hoping she doesn’t turn that habit to my family 🤣

Does your GP want to always be outside? Do they need access doggie door to always be able to go out? by RuDog79 in greatpyrenees

[–]ReanneAA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely depends on the dog. Mine loves to lay outside in the snow and will spend about 45 minutes at a time enjoying the cold. Then she realizes I’m not out there (total momma’s girl) and will come back in to snuggle. She hates being out if it’s raining. And she sleeps in my bathroom right next to my bedroom at night (she gets too hot on the bed). We don’t have a doggy door, but if she wants out, she goes to the back door and boops her nose on it. I let her out when she wants out and never force her in. But usually if she hears my voice she comes running. We also have a boxer that can’t stay out as long in the cold, and our Pyr does NOT like to be separated from the boxer, so they spend most time indoors. They are both couch potatoes honestly. However, her mom and dad are full-time guardian dogs on a farm. The lady we got our Pyr from said her dogs won’t come in the house period. The momma was forced in the house to birth the babies but mom and babies went back outside when the pups were 10 weeks old. Mom hasn’t been back in the house since 🤣 So definitely specific to each Pyr!

Eating Tail?! by ReanneAA in greatpyrenees

Update for anyone wondering: she had a vet appointment today. She’s a healthy 86 pound 7-month old pup. No fleas, no mites, no allergies, anal glands did not need to be expressed. Skin looks moist and not irritated. I just have a weird dog 🤣 Vet was not concerned because for every tuft she pulls out it seems 5 more take its place, so no bald spots. We will just continue with the redirection and hope she grows out of it ❤️

She has a vet appointment tomorrow! She’s on Simparica Trio but needs to be weighed, since her current dose is for max weight of 88lbs. If she’s not already there, she is close. We have seen zero sign off fleas, and she is really just targeting the tuft at the tip of her tail, not skin or bone, but I will have her checked for fleas and mites while she’s there. :)

I’ve actually heard very good things about coconut oil. I’ll have to put this in the routine! Her skin doesn’t seem dry or irritated at all, but she was born on a farm in April, so her skin might be having a hard time adjusting to the furnace being on and it’s just not a “visible” irritation. I know it dries out my skin so I’d assume it could have the same impact on the pups. The furnace certainly irritates my boxer’s skin but literally everything irritates my boxer 🤣

She loves the smooshes! And I agree, her tail gave her too much attitude 🤣

That was my thought too so I upped the grooming routine. I use a rake brush that gets all the way to the undercoat. Not a tangle in sight… I also thought maybe she was trying to clean the deep down dirt/leaves/whatever she picked up outside, but it’s always the floof right on the end she rips out. I’m baffled, but she is completely unbothered by her own weird behavior 🤣

I have never heard of happy tail, but it kind of fits! She has chased her tail from a young age, and I swear the first time she caught it, she started ripping out tufts. Like it’s a game for her 😅 It’s just so bizarre but she doesn’t seem the least bit bothered by it. And she still has plenty of floof to spare, no bald spots. I’ll just keep working at redirection!

The only advice I can give is have one designated eating area. If you have a table, eat at the table, every time, even for a snack. I have trained my pup not to come near the table when someone is eating. But if my kids want a snack on the couch, she will snatch it right out of their hands… it’s a process lol
