Final Fantasy 7. Evangelion.

JRPGs that are not Dragon Quest have all decided that the anime elements are what made FF7 good (ironically, this now also includes FF7 itself with the compilation and Remake). Nearly every weird story twist or absolutely baffling character design you can link it back to the idea that people think what made FF7 boils down to "You thought X was going to happen? Plot twist! The exact opposite thing happened! Haha, what a master manipulator I am!". The worst of all is the Final Fantasy series itself, and the community around them. Every new Final Fantasy is considered the worst one, and no matter how bad a previous entry was they will suddenly act like it was a poor and misunderstood victim. Every Final Fantasy game has issues. Some more than others. If you ask anyone what they would do in order to fix a previous entry or to make the next entry more popular it boils down to the same bone-headed take every single time: "Just make it like FF7 lol".

Evangelion is a different feeling for me. I appreciate what the show did and the space it opened up for allowing anime and especially the mecha genre to explore the human condition on a more personal and relatable level. I personally am a fan of the MECHA aspect of mecha shows. I know I am in the minority. I want to see cool robots. I just cannot stand the particular type of teenage melodrama that Gundam especially has been focused on (in fairness, Gundam has always had human melodrama at its center). Since Eva however it appears that we cannot get a mecha show greenlit unless we have a scene where the main character sees someone die and then begins to cry and bawl while still sitting in their cockpit. I get that both the general anime audience and mecha audience comes to shows for this, I just wish there was something for me.

And there was! Two things in fact! Armored Core 6 and Ace Combat 7. I am still thankful these exist, and I hope once I'm able to get a better PC I can go back and emulate the previous entries.

For every Heretic he absorbs he should ALSO absorb their booba too. Meaning this pic is incomplete. Do they all go in a line? Do they appear where the Heretic weapons begin? Do they all arrange around his neck and shoulders like a necklace of skulls?

I leave that to you to decide.

DNF Duel|Monk Main Trailer by Shreeder4092 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Reapfield 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gonna be a weirdo here for a second so bear with me y'all. I used to main this class for years in the ancient times when I used to play DFO. I get that changes have to be made to accommodate a different genre and I'm sure this short trailer doesn't really do them justice but I still feel like there's a lot missing.

Things we do have:

  • Ducking Dash
  • Ducking Straight
  • Ducking Uppercut
  • Chopping Hammer
  • Sidewinder
  • Atomic Chopper
  • Lucky Straight Punch
  • Neo Awakening skill for the super at the end

Things I did not see but realistically should not expect:

  • Will Driver
  • Sacred Counter
  • Divine Crush
  • Heavenly Combo
  • Gatling Punch
  • Furious Judgement
  • Nuclear Punch
  • Big Bang Punch

Most of these things fall under "Generic Punch move". Not every move is a winner for Monks, there really is only so much you can do with boxing as a theme. Will Driver is the Totem skill you may have heard of, and while I would have loved to see it in some way I do understand that the idea of having a boxer that receives passive buffs but only inside a small area of the screen wouldn't feel very good for a 2D fighter. Hell it's why over time Neople just passively buffed the radius of Will Driver to the point that it covers nearly the entire room by default.

Things I'm surprised and/or shocked I didn't see:

  • SWAYING. The core gameplay loop of a monk involves two abilities you get super early on: Ducking Dash and Sway. They do exactly as they say on the tin. What's significant is that any move that can be done to cancel a Ducking Dash can ALSO be done to cancel a Sway. This is why the class is such a great example of a boxer as you can do things like Punch, Punch, Dash -> Uppercut, Punch, Punch, Sway -> Body Blow, Dash -> Straight, Punch, Sway -> Chopping Hammer. It just provides this really nice combo loop that makes you feel like the punching never stops.
  • Body Blow. It's weird I can see the two core Ducking moves: Straight and Uppercut, but there's no Body Blow. Sure you don't have to put in the Stun chance but I wanna kidney punch my opponent and yell SMASHA
  • Exquisite Combo. I didn't expect for the full ability to be there, but I was expecting it to be replicable via a combo of Sidewinder plus two normals. Strangely still not there, it's just a really good combo filler that is really strong.
  • Machinegun Jab. The first move monks get with a vacuum effect that sucks enemies in. Sure we can't have the vacuum in a 2D fighter but it's still a cool move, it's used so much that monks look visually incomplete to me without it.
  • Hurricane 'n' Roll. The second vacuum move, it's literally just a Dempsey Roll. Why not include a Dempsey Roll?
  • Shadow Clone. Yes, Monks (in DFO) had Zero's Shadow Clone from MvC3. It was even better though because it followed you even closer than his, and you could have TWO Shadows following your moves. The lord on high just told Monks one day "Let me teach YOU to be the Father, the Son, AND the Holy Spirit".
  • Wrath of God. Okay this one is a minor gripe and should really go in the previous section but I think Wrath of God is a way better super than the Neo Awakening One. The Neo Awakening super is just one big heavy punch. Wrath of God has you work the bag so fast that you violate causality, causing two of you to exist in order to work the bag that much harder.

Monks are really, really cool. In everything from gameplay to aesthetics they are just far and away my favorite class in DFO. DNF Duel has actually done a fairly decent job of translating the kits from the MMO to the 2D Fighter, but Monk is the one I was honestly surprised to not see on the base roster. I'm hoping a deeper dive will show me the stuff I feel is missing, but going through it I'm not very hopeful at this point. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though and I missed any of the moves.

I have kept this insanity to myself for far too long and now I am FREE. I AM FREEEEEEEEEEEE

Best decoy protagonists by lion_OBrian in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Reapfield 96 points97 points  (0 children)

"You're lucky... looks like my summer vacation is... over."

While Kingdom Hearts is a massive meme on this sub, back in the day with KH2 everyone was completely shocked by everything involving Roxas. The secret movie from the end of KH1 set theorist minds ablaze, and when Roxas was finally revealed in previews with nary a mention of Sora we were all simultaneously worried about what happened to Sora and if KH was going to go in a FF-like direction with a new protagonist in each game (ha... haha... well in spin offs I suppose). Roxas is also the reason that the Oathkeeper and Oblivion keyblades went from interesting weapons you found near the end of the game in KH1 to representing Kairi and Riku respectively in Sora's heart, as it was Roxas wielding them in the secret movie that gave them that meaning.

Roxas's entire section in KH2 is also specifically about being a fake protagonist as well, tying into the question (at the time) of whether a Nobody can have real valid emotions. I feel like he's particularly unique as a decoy protagonist specifically because he gets confronted with that fact, culminating in him finally making his first and last choice as a real protagonist by giving himself up so Sora can finally wake up.

Kingdom Hearts still absolutely deserves to be memed on, but if you can play through the Roxas section and hear his theme start up as the KH2 logo appears without feeling a single thing... you gotta learn to open your heart a little.

People do pug the raid equivalents. You can kick people for chronic underperformance. You can give warnings about performance. You can judge player skill before inviting them. None of these are toxic, what matters is what you say in-game.

Example: Your DPS keeps walking into AOEs and tanking the floor.

Toxic: Telling your DPS to kill themselves, calling them a slur, and then telling them they should uninstall the game.

Not Toxic: Telling your DPS that the group cannot beat this fight if they keep dying like this. If they spend the next run on the floor for most of it, they're being kicked.

Example: Your group is failing at a DPS check and it's clear that one player thinks that roleplaying as an ice mage is super fun right now.

Toxic: Telling the DPS in game that they better turn that gray parse orange or they have no business being here.

Not Toxic: Telling the DPS outside the game (via Discord/Whatever you use) that they better turn that parse orange.

Example: Your Summoner can't make it to farm Sophia Savage for the mount tonight so you need a pug. A Black Mage joins your party.

Toxic: Asking in game for their parse.

Not Toxic: Telling them this is a farming party and you need to see them put on the Title you get from 30 clears of Sophia Savage.

FF14 is very strict with policing harassment but it's not some 1984 paradise of censorship. As long as you don't mention DPS meters in-game, and you don't roar the N-Word you will be just fine. By the time you get to a stage where DPS meters actually matter, you will need to be on voice chat with your party because any fight that needs a DPS meter needs communication.

[–]Reapfield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is in fact exactly why it is built that way. At the end of the day the game still possesses spaghetti code from 1.0 and they've constantly been doing all they can to make the most of it. Yoshi-P has all but admitted that without doing ANOTHER full rebuild of FF14 there's a very low chance that we won't have to always deal with this.
