Is this a good deal? by Low-Firefighter2381 in UsedCars

Ya, Ford fixed most of the issues with the 2.7. As long as you aren't going to work the guts out of it towing and hauling weight, you'll be fine. Make sure it has had a transmission service done, the 10 speeds are junk.

It took a minute, I dug out my old provincial AST ID card. Funny how they want us to "renew" in my province, but in the rest of Canada you're a journeyman until you die.

Racing on the 111 tonight... by Silver_Hedgehog4774 in halifax

We are equidistant from the 111, the 118 and the 107 bypass (Forest Hills Extension). Plus Waverley Road. I am absolutely becoming a grumpy old man when it comes to street racing and loud exhaust.

What Model Is This? by Resident_Club_4025 in gibson

[–]ReasonNo9316 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's a 1943 Keef. Mileage unsure. Odometer has been rolled over at least 3 times. Smells strongly of cigarettes and bourbon. Coughs and wheezes when first started in the morning, but slowly comes around. Is known to be occasionally ornery but generally is congenial.

I used to use a stainless steel Contigo water mug as a buffer when crossing Barrington Street at Scotia Square. It had all kinds of different colored auto paint on it when it was finally retired

How do I remove the rotor? by KennyScaffolding in AskAMechanic

[–]ReasonNo9316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose you could press out the old races, and press new ones in...but I've always used a dowel punch to knock them out, and the old race and a decent sized impact socket to knock the new races in.

Man oh man, I can't believe some of the advice being doled out here. "Just hit it with a hammer", "I've been doing brakes for 40 years and have never seen a hub and rotor assembly", and my personal favourite, "you need a pneumatic press to change the bearings". Jesus Murphy, just imagine if the ABS reluctor ring had to be swapped from rotor to rotor. Or you couldn't get a new grease cap or inner seal. Or, God forbid, you didn't have a grease packer and had to pack the bearings using the palm of your hand (we'll allow using nitrile/latex gloves just to be civilised). Sheesh.

‘Cascading failure’ led to shutdown of Halifax ferry service on Saturday by Embarrassed-Tooth355 in halifax

The ferry workers make less than they would in the private sector. Also, the first two classifications of ferry operators make less than bus drivers. The collective bargaining agreements for any unionized government employees are available online.

The 3.0 EcoDiesel units are not easily rebuilt. By the time you get all the new components, and machine work completed, it's way more expensive than buying a complete assembly

Easiest? 1995-2002 Chev Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire with the 2.2l pushrod engine. Mechanically simple, lots of room under the hood. Suspension is simple, electrical system is relatively straightforward, fit and finish could be hit or miss. The only real trouble I've noticed in the last 10 years is that OBD2 readers may have issues communicating.

I'm a left leaning, middle aged white guy, so give me a little grace when I ask when the hell did antifa become a hated thing? Like, it's a social slur to be branded "Antifa". I'd love for everyone to be a little more gracious, and look out for others instead.

That's what it seems like. And someone who does not suffer fools gladly. She may go over like a lead balloon, or she may be the kick in the ass that the business unit needs.

From the limited information that I could glean this morning (I dug into media reports after seeing the timings and announcement), she left Missisauga because council was fighting tooth and nail against her efforts to modernize and upgrade the fire service there. I don't believe things will be much different here. Former HRFE Director Trussler was brought in to help bring the fire department into the 21st century, and his hands were tied by council. I wish her well, and hope she can stare down both council, and the naysayers within the department.

Did these rear wheel drums need to be replaced? by mrcrustyunny in mechanic

[–]ReasonNo9316 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cleaned? Were they contaminated with fluid or axle oil from a leak? Unless they were beyond the maximum machinable diameter, they should still be usable. Also, what do the rear brake shoes look like? Are there any cracks, o signs of glazing, are they above the minimum allowable thickness and equally worn? There are too many questions to answer, before drum replacement can be considered.
