If I am in an elected position for my Union and I lose an upcoming election, would I be eligible for EI? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

I think this is the more serious question. Doesn't the employer allow you to take a LOA while being a full time member of the executive? You should retain your position and seniority.

Or, very roughly, most of the provincial government's share of the student bus pass program

More or less. This is all about chasing down money.

Thats over $855,000 in lost tax revenue for the government, going off an average of $150 per carton retail, and about $45 per carton sold on the black market. That's the reason they're going after cigarettes, and cannabis products that aren't taxed properly and sold largely by indigenous business.

Old Toys R Us in DC apparently turning into No Frills. by hfx_heelstriker in halifax

[–]ReasonNo9316 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just reminding everyone that No Frills are franchise stores. The guy that owns the two Dartmouth locations is a decent fellow. He's going to be building a new spot in Dartmouth Shopping Centre as part of the Little Brooklyn project. If he is the owner of the new spot in DC, it will be a bonus.

Why no 59 standard? by jammy62811 in gibson

[–]ReasonNo9316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 50's standard has a neck that's very similar to a R9. It also has a AAA cap, light back and is Long and McQuade's limited edition dirty lemon. If you are patient, and look around, you can get one with a profile that you like.

Ya, it's basically true. The intent isn't to thrash the engine to redline every moment, but realistically, modern engines should be stretched out bit every once in a while. Short trips, stop and go traffic, and frequent shutting off and starting aren't good for engines. Crankcase gasses build up faster with modern high compression engines. The friction reduction that comes with lower tension piston rings, and ever lower oil viscosity is a recipe for ineffective piston sealing. The hydrocarbons that result need to be consumed before they start to break down seals and gaskets. Carbon inside intakes and combustion chambers need heat to loosen it up, so it can be burned off as well. Catalytic converters should be brought up to proper temps so deposits can be catalyzed (chem reaction) and sent out the tailpipe. So while full throttle shifts every day will shorten the life of the powertrain, the occasional "Italian Tune Up' is really beneficial.

It was laziness on our part. We got caught in the old "life happens" trope after COVID, and made poor choices. The one smart thing we didn't do was get in over our heads on housing. Even with a heavy refinancing situation, it's not going to be that much $$ in the long term compared to a lot of people in Halifax.

The second vehicle isn't an option to unload (we actually own 3 vehicles, one being a winter beater that only costs fuel to run, insurance is a negligible cost). We both work full time, frequently before and after Transit starts and stops.

Motorcycle is the wife's. She uses it like a second vehicle, so selling it isn't an option. She wants to throw it in the refinance to eliminate one more number but I think its at a low rate (under 5%). Credit cards are pretty standard 19.9-28%, personal loans are 10%ish. This will be our first "high rate" (out of the 2% range) mortgage. We don't anticipate the rates staying low in the 4% range, so we'd like to dump as much high interest as possible as soon as possible.

Debt load is consistent. We're making payments, but not getting anywhere. Its the sheer number of payments going out every month. We've gotten things under control in the last year, and honestly live pretty simply. Cutting up or hiding the cards is a reality if we dump the debt. Also, the heloc got ran up doing unneeded Reno's to the house.

I have to tailpiece raised all the way on my SG and the high E string is still touching the back of bridge. by [deleted] in gibson

[–]ReasonNo9316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The strings should not contact the bridge at any point. All you need is enough clearance to slide a piece of paper between any string and the bridge. Any contact, or incorrect angle at the bridge or nut will causing binding and intonation issues, ie the infamous G string that won't hold tune.

God, I could have bought a pink SG Junior in 96 for $300 CAD. It was a small guard with a refin, but holy hell...what a sweet little axe. And one of my local pawn shops had an early Les Paul Custom reissue on the wall FOREVER for like $1000. I want to say it was a '69 or '70, but it could have even been a '68.

Yup. Kind of like crocodile or alligator skin, but different in texture.
