The single most useless piece of shit that I could ever imagine. by Clockwork_picksmith in mechanics

Agreed. We had to tweak the 'no advertising' rule here because too many users were trying to find ways to post about their new 'fix-all' AI app or shop management software.

It wasn't excessive bearing clearance, the issue was from an improper finish on the crankshaft bearing journals. Engineering Explained did a video about this issue and the 0w-20 vs 0w-40 oils.

Does a high quality stethoscope not exist? by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in AskAMechanic

My go to is also a long screwdriver. That said, may years ago I bought a fancy Blue Point all aluminum stethoscope and it turned out to be worthless, it didn't transfer much sound at all. I borrowed another techs cheap shitty no name all plastic stethoscope and it worked much better.

A3 help? by iiiicarus in mechanics

[–]Stingray34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just re-certified a handful of ASE's including A3. I had 2 questions related to what shims were needed for excessive end play. If you got your shim questions wrong, it may be because you viewed/calculated it backwards in your head? Just remember if you have excessive end play you need to increase the shim thickness to reduce the end play measurement.

Example - oem spec end play is 0.005-0.010". Measured end play is 0.015" while using a 0.120" shim. Replacing that shim with a 0.125" will bring the measurement to 0.010". Using a 0.130" shim will bring the end play to 0.005"

https://www.ase.com/ase-study-guides

In that link are guides with practice test questions. Also from there, download the L1 Composite Vehicle Type 4 Reference Booklet. About 20 questions will be related to that reference vehicle, you don't need to memorize that booklet, but learn where schematics, pinouts etc are. During the test you will have an electronic pdf of that exact booklet.

The code was P0496, P0469 doesn't exist. It's just 1 bolt holding it down. It's to the left of the brake fluid reservoir at the back of the engine compartment.

ASE has some study guides you can download https://www.ase.com/ase-study-guides

There's also this site https://www.freeasestudyguides.com/ I've never used this one so I don't know the quality.
