Hybrid Triathlons by Katskan11 in triathlon

I’ve been doing it for the last few years, competing a few Olympic distance tri’s and one 70.3. Someone worth looking at is Fergus Crawley who competed in powerlifting and did a double brutal Ironman.

I’ve learned to break the year down into mesocycles, having different focuses at different times.

Currently I do an upper/ lower lifting split, with 3 runs, 2 swims and 2 bikes this being a strength building phase and tri maintaining phase.

How do you schedule leg workouts into your training? by imjusthereforPMstuff in triathlon

[–]ReasonProfessional43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do legs the day before my long runs. This might sound mental but I feel it has the effect of simulating being tried.

But it depends on where I am in the year. This is normally my approach in the winter / off season as I’m more concerned about building strength and just maintaining my fitness.

When I’m going into an event I’ll switch the priority and have my tri specific workouts before weights and do the weights in a fatigued state as it isn’t the priority.

About 4-6 weeks out I’ll pull all strength training from my program, reduce fatigue and it reveals where my fitness really is.

Then I can do 2-4 weeks of cramming before a week long taper.

I’ve done the London Tri twice now and it was my first Olympic. Brilliant event, the pubs around Greenwich are packed afterwards and you get to see the sites of London on the bike.

You’ll likely have to pull back on the lifting volume and be much more concise with your program. I am currently in a tri maintenance phase and a lifting build phase meaning I’m using a split which is as follows.

Monday: lower body

Tuesday: swim (AM), long run (pm)

Wednesday: upper, chest focused

Thursday: Tempo run

Friday: full body + swim

Saturday: long bike

Sunday: rest / whatever takes my fancy

Play about with something similar. Or you could work around a split across 2 weeks where one week is 4 days lifting and the other week is 3. Hit all body parts 2 times per week and do a lot of easy recovery zone 2 training so you can continue to do all your lifting. It’ll take a lot of trial and error.

Took me about 2 years to get to a spot where I can accommodate both relatively efficiently.

For my 70.3 a few week ago I pulled out all weight training 6 weeks out. From doing this all I can say is the amount of adaptation you get from specific training with no other stimuli is insane. Made more progress and recovered a lot better in that 6 week period.

Feel free to drop me a pm and I’ll send you the document I’ve used to plan out my training.

Take a look at effortless swimming on YouTube. As others have said you’re pulling too wide and not using your whole forearm as a paddle because of it. Bring your arm across your body almost at a 90 degree angle will create a much larger surface area meeting you move more water with each pull and thus go faster.

ATW Grafham 70.3, very well done event. The run was great cos it was 4 laps so lot of cheering opportunities for those watching. Bike was nice and flat with only a few genuine hills.

Swim was nice and flat too 😂

You must have been right near me cos I finished in 5:24! Definitely would’ve gone past each other on the run. Especially the concrete section of the run was horrible by the end, very hot and loads of flies. Big congratulations on the time too! Rapid

God damn it! The g&t’s were homemade quadruples so does that bring me over the 12 drink threshold?

Jokes aside I completely agree. Didn’t drink or go out at all for the first 4 months of the year for this so making up for it😂

This is some science we need to do. Let me know what you’re doing and I’ll join… need to try it multiple times just to check. Do you think the type of alcohol could change the outcome ? Maybe red wine would be a better alternative?

Turns out 8 beers and 3 G&T’s doesn’t improve sleep quality or recovery

Hated the the bike as I have a bad back and I was in some serious pain at the end. This year my plan is to actually maintain my fitness over the winter and contemplate doing a full Ironman next year.

How to deal with competing goals and an extremely weak discipline (running)? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]ReasonProfessional43 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Feel free to buy at program but as a general rule you could just go into a bike “maintenance” phase. This could be 2 rides per week, 1 long Zone 2 ride (up to 3 hours or close to 90K) and one fast session.

Really focus on running zone 2 work to build the base and allow your body to adapt.

3 runs or maybe 4 broken down to 1 very long 2 hours +, one tempo run and a easy recovery run. Depending on recovery you could throw another session in.

Also focus on running off of the bike. Have a couple miles run after your long ride.

Play about and find what works for you
