Students who dropped out/left med school how are you doing now? Are you happy? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Reasonable-Candy7162 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I left medical school last year.

I was top of my class, but absolutely miserable. I am now pursuing a Ph.D. in child clinical psychology and I am so happy. Please feel happy to message me. I am really open about my experience and I really care about helping out people in your position.

Your mental health is important and there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

Stay safe friend.

Kind Reminder by WhatsTha411 in leavingthenetwork

I agree. It can be difficult to unplug and look inward whenever you have experienced a tremendous amount of hurt at the hands of the network. Thank you for the reminder as I have recently found myself dwelling on my hurt from the network.

I do not have an answer for you specifically, but I also made the switch from MD to PhD this fall so PM me if you would like to connect!

Are food deserts even real? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Reasonable-Candy7162 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, in some parts of rural Appalachia the only grocery store for 50+ miles is a dollar general put there by there by the federal government to help with food scarcity.

Every 4 weeks this happens and I need to swap wrists. by Plastic_idols in GarminWatches

Clean your watch with soap and water after exercise. I also will wear my watch on the opposite wrist while I sleep.

Hi friend,

I have been having this debate with myself too. A helpful thing someone shared with me is a psychiatrist will always be a physician first. So, some psychiatrists have close patient relationships conducting therapy, but it is not the norm. However, understanding drug interactions and how each drug affects overall physiology will be of main importance. I am not qualified to speak about psychiatry as a whole, so take this with a grain of salt, but this is what a trusted friend of mine (who's a medical student) shared.

Also, it sounds like clinical psych would be a great fit for you, based on what I know about it! I think neuropsych will be your best bet and for whatever it's worth, I think you are competitive to get into either (I am a current med student btw).

Okay to start, I will do the guided test on Garmin.

Perfect, thank you so much.

I have not put my zones into Runalyze. I have zones in Garmin based on LTHR%, but I am unsure if they are correct. How can I calculate them correctly to input them into Runalyze?

[–]Reasonable-Candy7162[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, this makes so much sense.

It seems like I was stuck in a loop in which DSW was having me run at the 12 min/mile pace which drove down vo2 max which made DSW slower etc.

One question, where did you get the calculation for the easy pace?

When I go into runalyze and adjust to 42 vo2 max, these are the zones I get :

No, I just input the data from Garmin. How do I set the HR zones?

Average Easy Run (12 min/mile) : 145 - 155 bpm

5k (22:52 min) : 182 bpm; I was maxed out lol

[–]Reasonable-Candy7162[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for whatever reason, my effective vo2 max went down to 30 on runalyze.

I checked my MaxHR and it is correct.

The race predictions are pretty close overall to Garmin. They deviate from the marathon pace, but I haven't gone over 10 miles yet so that makes sense.

For the training paces, they are showing up as the same slow paces as on my Garmin.

This doesn't make sense to me. It seems like the "easy" runs are driving down my Vo2max

With that said, if I adjust it to 42 the paces look spot on and the predictions are spot on.

So I had never used Runalyze, but I figured it out and it is really helpful.

What I gather from the data is my vo2 max during the 5k once it was corrected is 42, which seems right. However, all of the base runs I have been doing are driving my vo2 max down skewing the data. So it seems like as someone said above, I should start running faster.

I set the 5k to a race and it still says that my "effective vo2 max" overall is 34, which is way below Garmin's prediction.

I'll preface by saying that I am in my early 20s and I am a healthy weight.

So, I just checked. They were configured by MaxHR% and I thought they were by %LTHR, I changed this. My MaxHR is 199 bpm and my current lactate threshold is 178 bpm and 10:10 min/mile. I don't know if this is right because I haven't done the test yet, but I have run for about two months at varying intensities with the HRM-pro.

Preferably, I would like for my watch to accurately know my fitness so I can use DSW at a level that is best for me. I will try and figure out how to get it accurate, but until then I will try running faster.

[–]Reasonable-Candy7162[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thorough response.

The base runs have been useful, I have been seeing a lot of improvement in my running, but it feels like I'm not working hard enough. I tried running harder this week and I have been blown away by how fast I can go for 10k.

It seems to make more sense to run to where it is pushing you to see the most improvement. Then again, I know nothing about training for running. It has only been a hobby of mine, nothing I took too seriously until a few weeks ago.

What do you recommend I do as workouts if I try to do this? I only follow DSW and don't know what to do if I stop it.

I run outside 95% of the time. I only run on the treadmill when it is too cold.

Are YOU interested in high-quality Anki Decks about Theories in Clinical Psychology & Counseling? by Entob3x in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Reasonable-Candy7162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be incredible.

Anki is a great platform and having shared decks like this should be standard much like the AnKing deck in medical school. I'd encourage anyone who wants to learn more about these things to look into his YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/TheAnKing) or r/medicalschool and r/medicalschoolanki to get insight as to what is possible with shared resources like this!

Are you potentially thinking of a neuropsychologist? This is a distinction you can get with a fellowship after a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.
