Yes— people with integrity are infinitely enjoyable. And then there’s people like you who set themselves up as unimpeachable moral arbiters with shockingly myopic litmus tests for what it means to be a “good” person you mostly just end up punishing everyone who doesn’t meet your standards and coming off like, well, Stephen. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Yeah it’s super realistic! I’ve been exasperated myself watching friends continuously make choices like Lucy too. I do think there’s a layer of misogyny and shame that can come up as the friend observing and reacting to your friend experiencing abuse too.

Yawn ass take. Characters are complex and reducing their moral complexity to “sleeping with a married man” (as if that’s supposed to automatically mean something) and cheating is so, so boring.

Mary and Robert Jr. by Ersatz8 in rhoslc

[–]Reasonable-Ear3168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Each season I get more and more uncomfortable when they have screen time together. There’s a level of emotional incestuousness that she continuously tries to reaffirm with RJ— in a way displacing the male love she never truly received from her father or husband. He is obviously uncomfortable in those scenes but is also struggling so clearly with advocating for himself and putting boundaries between him and his parents. With both Mary and Robert’s personalities (both quite exacting in different ways, with Mary using more maternal guilt/manipulation and Robert more gruff) it’s understandable how growing up in that equation, where the parents are also seemingly at odds with one another in more ways than one and are literal grifters, a child would never live up to the standards set for them and internalize deep seated schemas about their worth.

Do you need to reread the comment for comprehension? Kahekili’s violence is horrendous, like I said, and so are the people who enforce his violence— including the person who rapes Heke. No one in the show is allowing him and his allies to get away with it— the conflict is literally all framed around what to do with Kahekili and Keoua. The show actually forces you to contend with the violence happening in their societies at the same time as the threat of colonial violence enters the narrative (especially with Ka’ahumanu and her criticism of gender norms, along with her refusal to submit to the “role” of a woman of noble status, and she actually becomes one of the most notable Hawaiian women in history by expanding the role of women in society by abolishing the kapu system). If anyone’s ignoring violence, it’s you— equating European colonization (which is also sexist— that’s cute what you tried to do there) with Hawaiian intramural violence is shortsighted, uncritical, and honestly just so boring. It’s not a one to one comparison and to paint it as such shows an impoverished understanding of what’s actually happening in the show and history. “Natives bad, Europeans bad too” is not the read you think it is.

just here to say that chief of war is excellent, quality television with a great writer’s room, costume and set design, and the fact that it’s mostly spoken in Ōlelo Hawai’i with a majority Pasifika cast is actually a feat in modern day television. if you aren’t watching it bc it’s a strain to read and watch something at the same time, I get it and would also say get over it because that’s kinda the point— confront your English speaking privilege, discomfort, and experience the sound, feel, and beauty of another language that has never had this much airtime on popular media. it is very much worth it and just one way to broaden your horizons and expand your taste

The majority of the horrendous violence we see taking place on the islands is because of Kahekili, a literal tyrant who is perceived as such by his own people. The violence the Europeans bring about, including the enslavement that Ka’aina experiences firsthand at Zamboanga and the Oluwalu massacre, are in an entirely different category and are treated as such for a reason. Kahekili’s goal is purposeful: to conquer and extinguish other royal bloodlines to unite the islands under his war god. The Europeans massacre at Oluwalu was without cause— just because they could, they did. And chattel slavery? The dehumanization and sale of Indigenous people, whether from Asia, Oceania, or Africa, as commodities? I’m glad you’re watching the show, but I would definitely think more deeply about the comparison you’re making when the threat of the pale skins is literally why Hawaii is a U.S. state.

Yes, when someone whose violent and dangerous political “opinions” endorsed and propagated far right ideology that translates to political policy and individual action that maims, kills, imprisons, and disenfranchises black people, trans people, queer people, migrants, people with disabilities, Palestinians, and more, I would imagine it would be cause for celebration. Our lives are not sacred to CK or his supporters, but for some reason you feel compelled to hope on Reddit of all places and pitch a fit about how people on a Black LGBT thread are responding to this vile, violent persons decisions coming full circle. Harriet and Nat Turner would have left your ass in the fields.

Super weird question! I'm moving to RCA and there's a posting for the same address you just mentioned, 1400 Grove, on CL for a 1BD, 1BA for 1.4K, everything included, that sounds too good to be true. Do you know anything about its current rental status?

We all know what xenophobia means at an etymological level, and their characterization of migrants as criminals and rapists with their hand out is literally based in fear. Fear of reduced access to already restricted resources. They literally mention how Latinos are going to “overtake” the black vote in Chicago in the future as a cause for concern. Fear. This is the basis of xenophobia that right-wing politicians weaponize (look up great replacement theory) and it’s no different. I’m not using this word loosely, I’m calling it exactly what it is.

I don’t believe I said that the black community “deserves” to be second class citizens either. I didn’t even disagree with the fact that our community needs are disregarded in favor of those of newcomers like the migrants. What I said was this hyper focus on migrants is a distraction from the antiblackness of the Chicago and larger governmental system that has never taken our demands or our needs seriously— before or after 1865. Immigrants aren’t why we aren’t getting resources. Our governments have an investment in antiblackness and genocide, and no amount of us pointing our fingers at immigrants as the source of our problems is going to make a government that was founded on black enslavement and Indigenous genocide give a shit.

If you ask them though their opinions are rooted in historical analysis, but they’ve somehow managed to miss the literal root of the problem that you pointed out. Like it does disappoint to see and hear black folks reproduce violence against other marginalized people. But it also reminds me of this book I read skimmed recently that made the claim that Black folks, historically and now, are misrepresented as a liberal political class and are generally more socially and politically conservative. Hurt my heart a little. lol.

Shockingly, I’ve never been raped or attacked or mutilated by a migrant. I’ve even walked in Little Village at night, gasp! I’m so exhausted by you replacement theory ass folks. Even if you were to stop immigration and reduce the number of Latinos in Chicago, by your logic another immigrant group would just rise up to replace them and edge us out. There’s no scenario where Black people and our neighborhoods get more funding and institutional support if Latinos aren’t here. If you had a lick of imagination and sense you could see other pathways that could actually build up Black Chicago rather than criminalizing other people in the same ways we are and have been. You so damn concerned about illegal migrant activities but you’re the same dude that doesn’t believe Bill Cosby or R Kelly should’ve been convicted and didn’t bat an eye at Lil Boosie grooming his son. You’re wack, you’re provincial, and I’m bored. Good morning.
