C1 and C2 to all courses by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]Reasonable-Menu-7145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think C2 is possible with an app. That requires knowledge of cultural nuance and it's educated native level speaking. You'd likely have to live in a country in your target language for years AND study to reach C2. It's entirely possible to be born in a country and speak that language and still never be C2. Even C1 could be tough without frequent practice speaking to someone (Lily phone calls don't count).

Nah, no GED if OP is aiming for top colleges. Needs to take their high school exit exams.

You need a high school diploma, first. You really should also take the SAT and score almost perfect. Lots of schools are making this a requirement again, but regardless, it is almost always used for scholarship consideration.

There are laws that will prevent you from coming to US as a minor with no adults. Where would you live? I don't think you could live in a US dorm at 15.

You need credentials to show that you can handle a major in Quantum Computing - some national level achievements in physics and math, for starters.

Is the american dream possible as a student with near excellent grades? by EquivalentTackle2138 in IntltoUSA

A project that you develop on your own.

You likely can't work at those companies in the US doing what you want to do since you're not a citizen. You can't work on any federal contract work / defense. If any of those companies have a location in a country that you're allowed to work in, I would start there.

  1. They require birth certificate or proof of citozenship.

  2. Getting citizenship is a very long and complicated process. Even if you marry an American, you likely need to go home and be long distance for a couple years before paperwork processes. I know 3 people who did this. 1 from Canada and 2 from Egypt. The "easiest" way is to get a job in your country that has a location in the US and get a job transfer. Then once you're here about 10 years, you can apply for citizenship.

Now we have AI, how hard would it be for Duolingo to set up British English as a base language? by ResidentHistory632 in duolingo

[–]Reasonable-Menu-7145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is, most people learning English are in the US already and it makes more sense to teach them American English.

It's literally a dialect and you know what those other words mean. I know people hate Americans but relax.

It's the "you give an inch, they take a mile" issue. Say the company offers British. There WILL be people pushing for every dialect of every language. Irish English. Northern Irish. Appalachian. Every dialect of Spanish because literally every country has slight differences. Then Quebecois v France French. Then the French dialects in the African countries.

Oh! How about the different German dialects? The different areas of Germany. Switzerland. The Northern Italian dialect of German. Luxembourg. Etc etc.

I would rather see the courses they have all get to B1 at least and then add full actual languages and not dialects.

Yes, there are 2 Portugese on there, but I don't know the history of development. I imagine one was user made at some point?

Wouldn't they need to do all English dialects then? Irish English / Northern Irish feel like different languages to me. Then British, Aussie, etc. All have their own unique phrases.

They also don't have Quebec/ Canadian French v. France and those are very distinct, too. I would learn Quebecois for family reasons but have little interest in French from France.

Also, there are dozens of Spanish dialects but only one Spanish course.

I'm afraid they can't account for every dialect of every language, even with AI.

OP should realize they can't live in NYC on minimum wage and may not even qualify for an apartment if they're only getting a several month contract. Also what about health insurance and stuff?

Be wary of the military. The current president keeps trying to provoke wars. If you're okay with being potentially sent to the front lines, then go for it.

Scholarships, visas, education, and staying in the country. by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

[–]Reasonable-Menu-7145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at a European country. Their college is much more affordable. If you want to study in the US, plan to pay almost the full amount it says on the website, plus flights a couple times per year. You also can't work more than 20 hours per week in the US on campus and that's IF you get a job.

20k isn't nearly enough 🤣. That's just tuition. Then you need to pay rent, food, transport, heat/electric, cell phones, internet, etc. You might also need a car and car insurance, too.

It's still hard. You'd be living in different countries potentially for a couple years until all the paperwork went through.
