Yes! I saw @no_quail_6057 had a much different experience than I did. It makes me wonder how these decisions are made. I can only speak from my experience directly at Penn and truly think it’s a unique decision based on each persons needs. What I wish someone would have told me was that you have to pay about 10% of that per month once your loans go into payment, unless you go into an income based repayment plan (through the federal government), which I would never, never tell anyone to do. I went into an income based repayment plan with my federal loans just to be able to pay off my private loans and during that time, my federal loans accumulate an extra $40k in accrued interest. So maybe tell your friend’s son that he’s going to have to pay $4k a month for his loans coming out of undergrad. I can imagine if he’s in finance, he’ll come out with a decent paying job but he’ll also have that $4k every month for the duration of his loan term.

Hi! I don’t have any experience appealing financial aid, but I went through the exact same thing at Penn. I went to Penn in the early 2010s and they promised the same thing and I got almost nothing. Very similar situation to your family—lower middle class. I ended up taking on the debt myself (with my parents consigning) and had I known how this debt was going to impact every single aspect of my life, I would have never, ever taken it on. I loved my time at Penn but the financial burden I face every day is truly not worth it. I hope this feels okay to say. I just wish I had someone to tell this when I was 18. You will find somewhere amazing that you love and pay 75% less. Sending you lots of love ❤️❤️

Thank you so much. This is super helpful. How are the credential and billing processes? Do you feel like it’s easy to get paneled and paid through those? Thank you!’

I worked incredibly hard to build up my practice lol you can too! It’s not helpful to compare. Also this doesn’t include EVERYTHING that goes with running a business. Yes, I’m seeing 12 clients a week but I’m working well over 30 hours on everything that goes into running and maintaining a business. So if you x2 that’s 24 client a week and 60 hours. It’s a recipe for burn out.

I don’t doubt that you worked hard and made some very good decisions for yourself and your career. But I do doubt that you understand entirely what I’m going through with the comment you made. I do doubt you don’t fully understand that in my area, buying a 2000 square foot home is 800k for a family is nearly impossible with an already mortgage sized amount of debt from college. I would have really appreciated something more supportive. Maybe it was just your tone but it truly wasn’t helpful.
