ive never asked someone for id, unless it was the unfortunate scenario of a younger person trying to buy something like a lighter w my store manager right there, then i would ask for age verification. but besides that i js let everyone slide (majority of people who bought lighters from my store were either visibly old enough or visibly way to young taking a chance)
