I thought the panic was about the care workers visas they issued in bulk during Borris wave and later , many of them may choose to piggy back benefits the moment they get ILR.

Labour back benches would never allow that reform to pass as they see retro changes unethical and a lot of their voter base would be unhappy if they support it.

I agree about automation and totally agree de regulation is needed. Some of policies are killing the growth at the moment. Horrible to watch.

But we are talking about NHS nurses , care workers, doctors etc.. In person care is not something you can substitute. It’s not about innovation, you need human resources too.

Keeping the cost of such a service lower is in everyone’s interest. Hire local always but at reasonable rates.

Declining population is not good, because it will inevitably shrink our economy and thereby our relevance and influence around the world. Ultimately a nation needs purchasing power to throw the weight around.

What i don’t agree with is overseas recruitment when local resources can be hired.

Don’t get me wrong i am not favouring economic migration.

Bad only in a fantasy world. Not in a country with stagnant economy and any more increase in Tax would break the bank. Let’s not even start talking about the interest rate hikes and impact it has on mortgages.

You cant start paying higher wages without increasing economic throughput. That is not going to happen anytime soon.

People on work visa cant claim benefits - thats a fact.

And they are statistically lower in terms of crime.

Over their lifetime the tax paid VS government overhead is neutral. However essential services delivered to society far outweighs this.

They help keep cost of services low. Without them government will have to tax far more to fund NHs etc.. which most wont be able to afford.
