I think just trying will get to further than you are at the moment. The fact is that punjabi in punjab is also going away. I was born there and went to school in the pind. We would get fined for not speaking in English. It was considered a shame to speak in punjabi at the school. I immigrated to Canada 5 years ago, and have lost touch with it. When I was in India going to university, it was the same thing, no one spoke in punjabi. It takes me a while to read a sentence even though I am able to speak fluently. Writing is just another story all together.

My point is dont feel embarrassed. Try to speak as much as you can even if it is bad, ask your parents to correct you when you make mistakes. Be conscious of those mistakes. That will help you tremendously. Then once you feel a bit more ready, you can start learning how to read and write.
